An Intercontinental Girlfriend's Getaway: Paris & London
Paris and London...what better destinations for the ultimate girlfriend's getaway! Our goal is to recreate the glamour days of travel. Culture, shopping, haute-cuisine and luxury spa treatments are all part of the plan, so the first important choice is our selection of where to stay.
Chateaux in Bordeaux
The train had rocked me to sleep after leaving Paris. A short three hours and few stops later, the whistle of the conductor announced we were pulling into Bordeaux. I almost expected the train station to be surrounded by chateaux, vineyards in long straight rows and winemakers carefully tending their vines.
Discovering a Secret of Venice
Pink lampshades cast a romantic glow over the ancient buildings lining the Grand Canal. Light danced on the water as the Vaporetto glided towards one of the most unique luxury hotels in Venice. Docking at Ca D'Oro, I gazed across the canal at the quiet Rialto fish market, which in a few hours would be bustling with life. Hotel Ca'Sagredo is located at the heart of the city, and was the ideal place to begin my exploration of one of Italy's most mysterious cities.
Dreaming in Provence
When I read, 'there is the first time we go abroad, and the first time we go to Provence' (Cyril Connolly, 1938) I was skeptical of finding a magic so drastically different from other destinations in Europe.
Explore Ancient Khmer Culture in Siem Reap, Cambodia
Cambodia, the ancient Khmer culture, a lost world, a modern tragedy -- we hardly know what to expect. Bunsak, our Cambodian representative from the Amansara meets us at the Siem Reap airport. He is kind, respectful, welcoming, proud, even joyful in the face of an uncertain future. He whisks us into the comfort of a waiting automobile for the short trip to the hotel. The odyssey begins.
Irish Country Escape at Sheen Falls Lodge
Far from the bustle of the city, it isn't traffic I hear when first waking, but the steady rushing of the River Sheen outside my window.
Luxury Travel Frontiers: New Destinations to Discover in 2010
Be the first to explore these luxury frontiers! The ten destinations on our 2010 Must-see List are this year's travel trophies. Most of these new hotels, resorts and lodges are found in destinations that haven't previously had luxury accommodations. These are travel experiences of a lifetime!
Modern Traveler in the Land of the Pharaohs
Travelers as far back as the Greek Herodotus (c. 450 B.C.) have journeyed to the banks of the Nile, drawn by its mysteries, fascinated by its concept of eternity...
Pampered in Sonoma
Just 40 miles north of San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge is the Sonoma Valley, northern California's food and wine mecca -- and my getaway destination! I select the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa as my base of operations because I'm interested in its facilities and its history. Other properties in the area are recent products of the wine tasting boom, but the Sonoma Mission Inn began welcoming guests in 1895, when travelers came to heal in its thermal springs.
Paris in Springtime
Notre Dame looked even better in the sunshine. With only a few small clouds for contrast, the 13th century church stood firm and tall, while visitors gazed from its flat top over expansive Paris.
The Exotic Culture of Santa Fe, New Mexico
Santa Fe, New Mexico sizzles with an exotic blend of colors, aromas and flavors. Spanish and Native American influences converge in the city's art, history and exhilarating passion for life. My base of operations is The Inn of Five Graces, a "one of a kind" retreat in the historic city center. The original owners, Ira and Sylvia Seret, reconfigured what were once separate properties into a labyrinth of 13 suites around interlocking adobe courtyards.
To the Ends of the Earth: A Voyage to Antarctica
What does it mean to travel to the ends of the earth? Is it a matter of distance, difficulty, or something more? Who will be one's fellow travelers? What is there to discover? I only knew I was headed for terra incognita.
