Cenote Sagrado | Mexico

Let's begin with a site that is sure to appeal to many individuals regardless of their creeds – Cenote Sagrado, otherwise known as the “Sacred Well” and the “Well of Sacrifice”.

Water is a sacred element in numerous religions, for example it is used in all sorts of baptisms, which is one of the many reasons why Cenote Sagrado is considered so special. The well is situated within the Mayan archaeological site known as Chichen Itza in Mexico. It is thought that Mayans often looked into and used the water to cleanse themselves and to worship Chaac – their God of rain. When archeologists first began to delve into the waters at Cenote Sagrado they found gold and jewels, as well as human remains indicating that sacrifices took place there.

Mount Sinai | Egypt

According to most Western religions – Christianity, Judaism and Islam in particular – Mount Sinai is one of the most important places in the entire world. Apparently, Mount Sinai is the very mount mentioned in the Old Testament where Moses or Musa spoke to God and received the two stone tablets bearing the Ten Commandments.

Each year, thousands of pilgrims who believe in the teachings of the Torah, Bible and Quran visit the place of worship that has been built in 1934 on the peak of Jebel Musa to pray together. Of course, you don't have to be devoutly religious or anything to truly understand just how special this location is, it apparently seeps from the ground and is clear in the wind.

Bodh Gaya | India

Though Hinduism and Islam are some of India's most popular religions, many Indian citizens also practice Buddhism, which is why one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage sites is situated in Gaya's Mahabohi Temple Complex in Bihar.

It is thought that Prince Siddhārtha Gautama was transformed into Gautama Buddha after gaining enlightenment under a bodhi tree where Bodh Gaya currently stands. Many of those who travel to the site go in the hopes of attaining a tiny speck of the enlightenment and wisdom Buddha received on that day.

It is true that these destinations may not be the most luxurious of places. There will probably not be any gourmet restaurants or fine art, but there will be crowds and a lot of walking. Still, we all know that visiting these places is an absolute must as you can truly become enlightened by your unique experiences.
