A Cape Town Haven for Whisky Lovers

A Cape Town Haven for Whisky Lovers
Located on the water's edge of the international yacht marina on Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, whisky tastings at Bascule take the experience to a new level by featuring the growing trend of pairing food with whisky. Not only can guests become a whisky aficionado but enlighten their palates to a whole new range of tastes.

No ordinary run-of-the-mill bar, Bascule is known for having one of the largest whisky collections in the Southern Hemisphere, withnearly 500 whiskeys (single malts and blends) from nearly every producing region including Scotland, Ireland, USA and Canada. Newcomers to the “water of life” (whisky's literal Gaelic translation) can develop their palates and learn about the history and tradition behind the process of distilling, maturing and blending with a tasting flight. Even folks who have done whisky tastings in the past can learn a thing or two.

Whisky tastings on offer include:

A Shared Experience – Presented by one of the experienced bar managers, each tasting includes a selection of six whiskies, three of which will be perfectly paired with various sweet and savory appetizers such as chocolate truffles, smoked salmon and blue cheese. This is an ideal vehicle for gaining more knowledge and to join fellow enthusiasts. Note that this tasting is open to a maximum of 12 guests only.

Sommelier's Choice - For the enthusiast, a personalized one-on-one tasting from a collection of rare and older malts - conducted by one of the experienced bar managers.

Guests are shown various ways to taste the spirits and each carries a strong history, and more than a few anecdotes to boot. The whiskies supply the sensory pleasures, but it is the stories that come with them that provide the real entertainment.

Whisky connoisseurs can become members of Bascule's prestigious whisky club. Members receive their own private whisky cabinets (complete with engraved name plaque) and invitations to exclusive events.

But there is more to Bascule than whiskey; the bar is perfect for an aperitif serving the best vintages from the thriving Cape vineyards as well as a delicious tapas-style menu. Cape Grace's wine sommelier is on hand to guide guests through the task of ordering the large selection of Cape wines on offer.

Overlooking the stunning waters of the V&A Waterfront marina which is decorated with gleaming yachts, Bascule is a lively and vibrant destination, the ideal place to enjoy a mid-morning cappuccino or light lunch. By night, the space is transformed into an alluring waterfront hot spot where local and international connoisseurs gather in equal measure to enjoy a slice of Cape Town's buzzing social life and listen to local sounds of live music on selected evenings.
