For admirers of ancient history – Augusta Raurica

Switzerland's largest Roman ruins, Augusta Raurica, offers a glimpse into the sprawling Roman city that once lay here, housing some 20,000 citizens. Located by the Rhine river, around 20km east of the city, the ruins are easily accessibly by bus and offer a wonderful day trip for history lovers of all ages. Here visitors can explore the large Roman amphitheatre, replica Roman houses, museums and several temples and see some of the many wonderful artefacts that have been unearthed here from gold coins to human remains.

For design devotees – Vitra Design Museum

Just across the German border and easily reached by tram or bus from Basel's main train station, the Vitra Design Museum is a factory complex showcasing buildings and designs from some of the world's most cutting-edge architects. The museum building itself is designed by Frank Gehry and each building houses a different element of the museum, from the impressive design museum and art gallery to the Vitra furniture factory, offering wonderful displays of furniture designs. Experience the full history and story of the museum by taking a guided tour, or simply pack a picnic and soak up the unique surroundings for yourself.

For children (and the young at heart) – Tinguely Fountain and Tinguely Museum

Children may not always appreciate the wonders of Basel's museums as much as enthusiastic adults, but even the most disinterested youngster is sure to enjoy the quirky Tinguely Fountain and the artist's museum. Jean Tinguely's work is noisy, colourful, crazy and inspired and interacting with the artwork is highly encouraged, making his work particularly popular with children (of all ages!) who can crawl around the sculptures and pieces as they choose. The unique museum highlights his eccentric and unique pieces and is highly recommended as a fun family activity that's packed with quirky culture. The Tinguely Fountain, just south of Barfüsserplatz, is also a joy to watch as kooky machinery and sculptures shoot and spray water, plus there's no cost to see it.
