An Irish Country House Lovingly Restored, Ard Na Sidhe Opens For Guests
A country house of style and serenity, Ard na Sidhe was built in 1913 for Lady Edith Gordon* and is one of the most impressive examples of the Arts & Craft style in Ireland. In 1960 much of the original character of the interior was lost but late last year Howley Hayes Architects were charged with the task of bringing the house back to its former glory through a substantial restoration and renovation project.

The rich palette of Kerry sandstone used in its construction imbues the house with a great sense of distinct, local charm. Since October 2010 work has included the restoration of original joinery, stone chimneypieces, new hardwood timber flooring and the magnificent oak staircase has been re-configured within an impressive new entrance hall, with natural stone flagged flooring and oak panelled walls. Externally - the building has been repointed and all of the original leaded metal casement windows were recased.

All ten bedrooms within the main house have been remodeled to reinstate their original room proportions and the former internal en-suites have been replaced with new Edwardian style bathrooms. The new interior decoration - hand knotted carpets and rugs, window dressings and wall papers were produced for Ard na Sidhe Country House by world renowned firm of Morris & Company. A number of antique furniture pieces, many of which were at Ard na Sidhe Country House during Lady Gordon's day, survive and have been found, repaired and returned to the house. Much of the new bedroom furniture was produced in Ireland by John O'Connell and many of the fittings and light furnishings were hand crafted in Ireland.

The terrace with its panoramic views of Caragh Lake and the remarkable Edwardian garden – one of the best in Ireland, and indeed Europe, is the perfect location to while away a few hours.

Jennifer Dowling, Manager said “We are very proud of the recent changes at Ard na Sidhe Country House. This beautiful home has been lovingly brought back to its original splendor without losing an ounce of its charm. We look forward to sharing this magical place with Irish and international guests over the coming season and for years to come."
