Conrad Bali Launches Gallery to Showcase Contemporary Balinese Art
The launch of East Art Gallery compliments the resort's vision of connecting guests with authentic Balinese history, culture and traditions. The new space will be home to the first of eight scheduled monthly exhibitions this year, with the first opening today by I Wayan Jana.

Conrad Bali general manager Jean-Sébastien Kling said, "We are thrilled. Developing this prime area into a living and breathing space for art and into a stage for the aspiring and outstanding Balinese artists to showcase their talents is a dream come true."

"Working with the art community in Bali is a key part of our efforts to connect guests and outside visitors with the destination and provide them with a genuine insight into the creativity, histories and heritage of this remarkable island. I hope the monthly shows will provide a new perspective that is focused in an easterly direction," Kling added.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the inaugural exhibition is titled "The Meeting" by Balinese sculptural artist, I Wayan Jana, whose father, I Ketut Muka, is also a well-respected sculptor in Bali.

Jana has forged his own path in the form of wooden sculptures through which he conveys his thoughts in the figures he crafts. For "The Meeting", he draws inspiration from a combination of the three symbols of Hinduism: the globe signifying men and women, the tooth, symbolizing the good and the bad as well as the heart, which stands for love. The result is a beautiful and positive expression of the evolution of life.

Thereafter, art and culture aficionados can look forward to other artistic expressions in the following months.

From 28 March to 1 May, multimedia artist and graduate from the Indonesian Art Institute Denpasar, I Nyoman Suarnata, will show his work in an exploration of social issues on Bali such as rice farmers selling their land to developers and the risk this can have in eroding traditional ways of life.

Prolific and award-winning painter, Balinese native Sugantika, will display his work from 2-29 May, offering an altogether different vision of Bali through spontaneity, playfulness and a love of life that shapes his work.
