Elbow Beach, Bermuda Offers Adventure Camp

The Adventure Camp features unique Bermudian experiences, beginning at Elbow Beach and then continuing across Bermuda over land and sea.

The Camp creates artists, divers, sailors, photographers and much more. It is the perfect opportunity to allow children to tap in to their inner adventurer in a safe and friendly environment. During their adventures, they will meet many Bermudians who will offer amazing stories about the tiny island of Bermuda, because although small, it is rich in history and beauty.

Young underwater enthusiasts will love programs like the Junior Padi Dive Certification, which they can complete through Elbow Beach's on-property Dive Shop, Blue Water Divers. Children will have the chance to become certified through interactive classes, pool dive lessons and actual open-ocean dives to shipwrecks and beautiful coral reefs. Children are provided with “I Spy” cards to identify fish and coral while diving. The Dive Shop also offers snorkel tours with underwater scooters.

For those that prefer to stay above the waves, children can enjoy learning how to sail through the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club. Group clinics and private lessons are available for children and families, allowing everyone to get out on Bermuda's beautiful waters. Blue Water Divers also offers ocean kayaking and paddle boarding lessons right from Elbow Beach's half- mile stretch of private pink sand beach.

Future Marine Biologists will be excited to visit the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo. Children will get hands on experience at the touching pool as well as a chance to feed the seals and families can enjoy a fun evening of exploration at “Aquarium after Dark” events. During certain times of the year, there is the opportunity to take a boat ride to watch the whales migrate past the island. An exciting night-time boat ride three nights after the full moon, and exactly 56 minutes after sunset, will give children the chance to see Bermuda's glow worms.

Budding young historians and their parents can also visit the National Museum of Bermuda, where they can learn about Bermuda's maritime history and culture through wonderful exhibits such as “Shipwreck Island” and by seeing the incredible 400th Anniversary mural which captures Bermuda's history over three floors. Elbow Beach can even arrange for a private tour with the museum's Executive Director, Dr. Edward Harris.

Bermuda's town of St. George's is a World Heritage Site. Families will be able to explore St. George's and learn more about the town through the African Diaspora Heritage Trail's “Exploring Sites of Memory” Square to Square Scavenger Hunt. While in the East End they'll also be able to visit Carter House, which has two examples of the earliest Bermuda dwellings, a 1612 settlers dwelling and a classic 17th century stone vernacular farmhouse. Carter House also specializes in endemic and native plants and trees, so children and their parents will be able to learn more about Bermuda's flora and fauna while touring the gardens.

Miniature Indiana Jones archaeologists will be excited to participate in Geocaching through The Bermuda Department of Conservation Services. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game where participants use a GPS enabled device to hide and seek containers, called 'geocaches' or 'caches'. A typical cache is a small waterproof container with a logbook, where geocachers can put their name, the date and any other information they wish to share about their experience finding the cache. This is a great outdoor activity for children and their parents, and provides ideal motivation for exploring the island of Bermuda.

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art www.bermudamasterworks.com/ has a variety of art and design classes for children of all ages, including a “Tots Create” class for young children and their parents. The museum itself has a wonderful variety of exhibits on display for families to enjoy throughout the year. Children are also encouraged to practice their photography skills during all their adventures with The Camp. The Camp is always happy to display the children's work in the Reef Clubhouse.

The Camp at Elbow Beach also offers themed activities during different holidays throughout the year. For example, at Easter, children will be taught how to make a traditional Bermuda kite and will learn how to fly it on Good Friday.

The Adventure Camp is priced per child per day based on what activities are selected, and can include roundtrip transportation and a boxed lunch for off-property activities. For those parents that are also interested in participating in The Adventure Camps activities, they are welcome to and are included in the price for their children. The Adventure Camp is available year round, but some activities are subject to seasonality and availability.
