This 11-day barefoot luxury safari starts at $15,600 per person, offering the best of African wildlife and rare solar eclipse viewings.
A solar eclipse is always a rare and unique event, but imagine seeing one from Northern Kenya. Extraordinary Journeys’ new 11-day Solar Eclipse Safari, taking place October 26th - November 5th, offers travelers the chance to explore Kenya's remote Northern Frontier and take in the magnificent solar eclipse from Sibiloi National Park on November 3rd, 2013. This ultimate barefoot luxury adventure also includes traditional game viewing in the Maasai Mara and Laikipia plateau, before heading north to view the eclipse at a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site.
Pricing begins at $15,600 per person*, based on double occupancy, and includes internal flights, luxury accommodations, most meals, wildlife viewing by 4x4 open roof vehicle with guide, all game park entry fees and unique experiences.
• One-on-one encounters with giraffes at Giraffe Manor in Nairobi;
• Hot air balloon ride over the Maasai Mara followed by a champagne breakfast;
• Bi-plane flight over Lewa Conservancy followed by horseback tour;
• Private helicopter charter over northern Kenya;
• Camelback safari at Desert Rose Lodge;
• Visit to the cultural Boma people of Laikipia;
• Solar eclipse viewing at Sibiloi National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site.
The safari begins with a night at the Giraffe Manor where travelers will enjoy one-on-one experiences with the giraffes as they feed them directly from their windows. The Manor was initially founded to rescue five highly endangered Rothschild giraffe babies and a portion of all proceeds are donated to saving endangered species and educating local children.
On the second day, visitors will head to the Ngare Serian Camp in the Maasai Mara, home to Alex Walker, a fourth generation Kenyan, bush guide and maker of wildlife documentaries. One of the settings for the classic film Out of Africa, the Maasai Mara is Kenya’s most famous reserve, home to Africa’s famous “Big Five” game and the sight of one of the most spectacular animal migrations in the world. Float over the plains in a hot air balloon for optimal viewing, followed by a luxurious champagne breakfast in open grassland upon landing. Optional activities include nature walks in the private reserve, honey gathering with the local Maasai and learning how to identify lions for Serian’s behavioral animal study.
Lewa Wilderness biplane
At the Lewa Conservancy, travelers will spend two nights at Lewa House, set atop a hill overlooking the rugged landscape of the Laikipia plateau. While here, enjoy a bi-plane ride over the reserve, traditional game drives, bush walks with Maasai guides, and visits to the cultural Boma to learn about the Conservancy’s several community projects. Depart Lewa on the seventh day via charter helicopter and fly to Northern Kenya’s Desert Rose Lodge. Here, partake in safari on camelback and interact with the local Samburu, El Molo and Turkana tribes.
The highlight of the trip occurs on the ninth day, when travelers head to the Sibiloi National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site, to view the long-awaited solar eclipse. The eclipse will begin during the afternoon of November 3rd and travelers will spend the night at the Sibiloi National Park, which with its rich history of fossil discovery, is a fitting location to marvel at the awe-inspiring phenomena in the sky.
Desert Rose Lodge
To top it off, the final days will be spent back at Desert Rose Lodge and Nairobi’s Ole-Sereni Hotel, where guests can relax, reflect, and take it all in with a one-hour massage before their flight home.
