Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse is a heralded collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Avant-Garde artists displayed in The Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Hall at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The exhibited paintings by Claude Monet and his contemporaries span a vibrant artistic period between the early 1860s and the 1920s – a time during which gardens captivated the imagination of many leading artists. As Monet said, “I perhaps owe it to flowers that I became a painter.” His “Grande Décorations” -- three massive six-foot-tall paintings together called the “Waterlilies,” are displayed together at the exhibition for the first time in 30 years. The exhibition's many Monet pieces are complemented by works from Renoir, Manet, Pissarro, Cézanne, Gauguin, Matisse, Van Gogh and John Singer Sargent, all inspired by the colors, shapes and stunning beauty of the garden world.
