Hippie Chic Exhibit at MFA Boston in July

Hippie Chic Exhibit at MFA Boston in July
The emerging hippie culture in these years rejected the dictates of Paris haute couture, adopting instead an eclectic, highly individual look mixing vintage and ethnic clothing with fashions inspired by contemporary psychedelic Pop art, nature, fantasy, and ethnographic art. For the first time, many new trends percolated up from the streets to affect ready-to-wear and even haute couture.

This exhibition will celebrate the works of young designers and innovative boutiques in the late 1960s and early 1970s, exploring the counter-culture looks that inspired “hippie chic” fashions. Hippie Chic will include about 50 ensembles, many of them new acquisitions, supplemented by 10 loans. The publication Hippie Chic (MFA Publications, 2013) will accompany the exhibition.
