Historic Convent Cottage is Saba's Newest Villa Rental
Saba is known for the picturesque traditional homes that dot its landscape, adorned in classic white gingerbread style with clay red roofs. Many are more than 100 years old and have been in local families for generations, and Convent Cottage is no exception.

Convent Cottage

This two bedroom/two bath house has been tenderly restored by third generation owner, Mark Johnson of Saba Island Premier Properties, whose family history with the property dates back 150 years. Mark personally designed the interiors and chose the furnishings, including some pieces of art and antiques from his personal collection. The cottage was originally in his mother’s family for several generations, when it was sold to lodge Dominican Nuns who were on the island as teaching missionaries. It was eventually abandoned and in disrepair, when Mark was able to purchase it back a few years ago. He immediately set about restoring the cottage and dubbed its Convent Cottage as a nod to its past.

Convent Cottage

Convent Cottage’s wraparound porch is a perfect spot to relax and discover the singular charms of Saba’s low key lifestyle. The nearly 1,600 sq. ft. home is located in the island’s quaint town of Windwardside, so is an easy walk to shopping and restaurants. Just adjacent is the Jewel Cottage, which is both Mark’s home and also the shop where he sells the jewelry he designs.

The period details of Convent Cottage offer delightful camouflage for the contemporary updates that the restoration achieved, including stunning bathrooms, a modern kitchen, walk-in closets, and crystal chandeliers. The nightly rental rate Convent Cottage is US$300.00 and comes with housekeeping services, while a chef is available at an additional charge. Often referred to as “The Unspoiled Queen,” Saba is the smallest of the Dutch Caribbean islands, but its unique offerings belie its size. One of the most distinctive and beautiful places on earth, this five square mile tropical forest soars 5,000 feet from the sea floor of which 3,000 feet are visible. With a population of just over 1,800, Saba is comprised of four main villages - The Bottom (Saba's capital), Windwardside, St. John's, and Zion's Hill (a.k.a. "Hell's Gate"). From the wide expanse of sea, jewel-like foliage and flowers that climb the mountainsides and the charming Saban cottages and buildings, Saba is a welcoming and friendly paradise for people who desire peace, tranquility and beauty. In addition, Saba is world renowned for scuba diving and hiking trails, as well as deep sea fishing and snorkeling. Saba can be reached by air and sea from the neighboring island of St. Maarten. www.sabatourism.com
