The Peranakan community (also known as the Straits Chinese) is a thriving force that has left an indelible mark on Singapore’s dynamic culture.

This Winter, InterContinental Singapore has stepped up its focus on its unique Straits Chinese guest experience by revamping its 65 shophouse guest rooms and suites to reflect the Peranakan heritage that is woven throughout the streets of current day Singapore.

The entire row of Peranakan-style shophouse rooms and suites preserved from the 1920s, have received a makeover incorporating inspiration from homes of Peranakan families dating back to the 17th century. Blending heritage and technology, the rooms also incorporate leading-edge technology.



The newly refurbished rooms add a fresh dimension to the hotel's 'Insider Collection,' a program that is unique to InterContinental properties. The Insider Collection has been enhanced by special touch points including a visit to the Singapore Peranakan museum, insights from experts on the Peranakan culture and tastings of signature Peranakan dishes.



Peranakan is a Malay term which means "locally born" – for centuries the riches of Southeast Asia drew foreign traders from afar including China and India to the region with many remaining to marry local men and women, resulting in intermarriage and the birth of the Peranakans. The Peranakan community is unique to Singapore for its legendary culture, savory cuisine, and colorful traditions. As Singapore reaches new heights of praise and recognition as the "Food Capital of Asia," it is the Peranakan cuisine and tradition that has over decades, grown to form the basis of the Singaporean culinary experience. Peranakan homes and architecture remain an integral part of Singapore and many of these unique residences can still be viewed in districts such as Katong, Bugis Street and more.
