Ireland's Castlemartyr Resort Offers Country Pursuits
A stay at Castlemartyr Resort is always a rewarding and entertaining experience thanks to its historical surroundings, elegant settings, flexible facilities, impeccable service, and 103 luxurious guest rooms. What could possibly make it even more special? Why, visiting with family, friends, or colleagues and enjoying a wide range of classic Irish country pursuits, of course.

One of the properties of The Dromoland Collection, Castlemartyr Resort is situated in the serene and lovely countryside of southern Ireland. Constructed by the first Earl of Cork and lovingly restored to its original grandeur, the seventeenth-century manor house re-opened in 2007 to serve as the resort's centerpiece. Nearby on the 220 acre estate are the ruins of a storied 800-year-old castle, a rolling meadow, mature woodlands, ancient walled gardens, and a lake graced with swans.

Other distinctive features of Castlemartyr Resort include the Spa at Castlemartyr, The Bell Tower Restaurant at the Manor House, the stylish and fun Clubhouse at Castlemartyr Resort, and Knights Bar with its renowned Irish whisky collection. And mere steps away from the manor house is a spectacular new wing of contemporary design – thoroughly modern yet enduringly elegant, from its generously sized and impeccably styled guestrooms to the bravura glass-enclosed spa and pool center.

And that's only the beginning of what Catlemartyr has to offer! Guided by the attentive, warm, and discreet staff members for which The Dromoland Collection is renowned, guests have a plethora of county pursuits from which to choose. The highlights:

Golf. Castlemartyr boasts Ireland's premier inland links-style golf course, and a one-of-a-kind clubhouse to match, at the Castlemartyr Links Golf Club. Designed by Ron Kirby and debuted in 2007, the 18 hole Irish Championship par 72 course is surrounded by classic Irish countryside, picturesque and tranquil and dotted by historic sites. Low greens encourage bump and run play; together with recessed, sometimes hidden bunkers, these features make the Castlemartyr course a fun and creative experience for those accustomed to parkland course play. Even those highly experienced in links play will find it a fair challenge, however, once Course Superintendent Trevor Norris sets it up to – as he phrases it – “show its teeth.”

Yoga and Fitness. Castlemartyr's fitness facilities include generously-sized pools, continuously replenished with sparkling water, and a gymnasium equipped with the latest Technogym fitness equipment. Both offer stunning views of Castlemartyr's grounds. Guests will also enjoy personalized classes or their own routines in the Yoga and Pilates Studio.

Fly Casting and Fishing. Master ghillie Maurice Cahill delights in trading tips, tricks, tidbits of natural history, and tall tales with anglers young and old, novice and expert, as they fish the lake or Kiltha River for trout. Also available are customized off-site fishing trips, including off-shore fishing trips departing from Youghal Harbour.

Target Archery. A classic Irish pursuit, archery options at Castlemartyr include coaching by an Irish ex-Olympian. Nock, cock, fletch, vane and quiver are just some of the strange terms guests will learn as they hone their knightly skills within sight of the ruins of Strongbow's ancient castle.

Laser Clay Shooting. Available at a dedicated shooting range, laser clay shooting provides all of the excitement of a traditional clay pigeon shoot with none of the associated dangers. Lessons are available for those who have not yet mastered this challenging country pursuit.

Walking and Jogging. Exploring the demesne is a favorite pastime of many guests staying at Castlemartyr Resort. All sorts of pleasurable surprises await around the next corner, including secret grottos, ancient chapel, formal gardens, and even a Heritage & Garden Trail. Visitors should be sure to inspect the resort's front gates, which tell a story without saying a word.

Castlemartyr Resort is decidedly kid friendly, even when it comes to the littlest adventurers. Options for their outdoor entertainment:

Pony & Trap Outings. Mr. Roy Daily, the estate's carriage man, and his Kerryboy ponies provide informative and relaxing tours of the grounds, as well as trip-driving lessons and exhilarating races on the meadow.

Bicycling. Bicycles are available for adults, children, and those who enjoy riding tandem. Guests need only ask the doorman or reception staff and soon they're off and rolling, perhaps accompanied by the estate's resident canine cavorters.

Lawn Games. During the warmer months, Mitchell's Lawn is an excellent locale for enjoying a variety of lawn games.

Stargazing. A telescope is available for exploring the skies of the Emerald Isle.
