Kivotos Hotel, Mykonos Showcases Emerging Artists
Last month the resort, situated in Ornos Bay, inaugurated its Kivotos Art Projects initiative, a succession of five art exhibitions that are being held at Kivotos Hotel's brand new onsite art space.

Nine talented contemporary Greek artists feature in the second exhibition, namely Kostis Velonis, Venia Dimitrakopoulou, Martha Dimitropoulou, Paulina Cassimatis, Apostolos Karakatsanis. Hara Piperidou, Panos Famelis, Maria Fragoudaki and Vaggelis Hoursoglou.

Kivotos Art Projects, which is being curated by Dr Sozita Goudouna, constitutes a series of innovative contemporary art shows with works by 23 emerging and established artists who utilize various media including painting, sculpture, photography, video, multimedia and art installations.

The exhibitions, which kicked off in May and will run consecutively through October 2013, are the first to be held at Kivotos Hotel's new art space. Hotel guests and exhibition visitors can also enjoy music and theatre performances that are being staged throughout the summer as part of the art space's launch celebrations.

Philip Michopoulos, co-owner of Kivotos Hotel which was inspired by a single antique, says that Kivotos Art Projects seeks to highlight up-and-coming young Greek contemporary art talent, as well as some of the country's more established names, with the unique morphology of Mykonos and the rest of the Cyclades as an attractive island backdrop. “We aim to contribute to the development of a creative dialogue between art and tourism, which can serve as a tool to further boost Greece's cultural profile worldwide,” he says. “Naturally, we are very proud of our history and cultural heritage, however there is a vast pool of young Greek art talent that the world doesn't know about it and we thought this would be a great medium through which to showcase their work.”

Kivotos Art Projects is participating in the Aegeanale international arts and culture platform which was launched last year on Mykonos and the tiny sacred isle of Delos under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism. The exhibitions hosted at Kivotos Hotel also encompass a philanthropic element as all proceeds from the sale of an objet d'art specially designed by artist Sophia Housou and available at Kivotos, as well as a proportion of revenue from the sale of exhibition works, will go towards supporting the ELPIDA Association of Friends of Children with Cancer.

The July 27 exhibition launch will also feature a performance by prominent choreographer Apostolia Papadamaki, DJ sets by Katerina Kafetzi aka DJ Kafka from En Lefko 87.7 FM and a live show by the band Penny & the Swingin' Cats. Media sponsors include Mega TV, elculture.gr, En Lefko 87.7 FM radio, Quintessentially, Daily Secret, https://eternal-optimist.com/, Portnews and Radio Illegal.
