Laucala Island Honored as New Member of The Leading Hotels of the World
Once owned by the Forbes family as a private island escape, Laucala Island was purchased in 2002 by Dietrich Mateschitz, CEO of Red Bull drink company, and launched in 2009 as the southern hemisphere's largest private island resort. Set upon 3,200 exclusive acres, Laucala Island offers 25 private villas as well as the freedom to experience a variety of activities led by veritable pros, ranging from the Par 72 Championship golf course designed by David McLay Kidd to beachside horseback riding led by a New Zealand horse whisperer to scuba diving and snorkeling with Fijian experts. The resort is 85 percent self-sustainable and prides itself on an integral philosophy, incorporating elements of the entire island into each guest's experience, from island-made spa products to cuisine derived from indigenous plants, fruit and aquatic life.

As the world's largest luxury hotel collection, LHW is comprised of more than 430 of the world's most elite properties in more than 80 countries, each meeting the highest standards of quality and distinctiveness. An exclusive collection of independent properties, ranging from grand palaces to intimate city hideaways to expansive self-contained resorts, LHW reserves membership for the utterly unique and boldly independent.

To be considered for LHW membership, luxury hospitality properties must apply for inclusion and undergo a thorough evaluation and anonymous property inspection that covers all phases of the guest experience. Once admitted, each member hotel is periodically re-inspected to ensure compliance with the company's quality standards. Established in 1928 by several influential and progressive European hoteliers, LHW started with 38 members. Now, more than eight decades later, LHW continues to curate and champion properties around the world that provide unforgettable, authentic travel experiences.
