Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Reveals Renovated Townhome Units Paying Homage to George Washington

As part of its ongoing commitment to continually update and improve each of its accommodations, Nemacolin recently renovated all the townhomes, giving them complete facelifts and changing their style and décor to reflect some of the region’s unique history.

There are three “neighborhoods” of townhomes; one remains Maple Townhomes, and the others have been renamed The Washington Townhomes and Washington Quarters as a tribute to George Washington. Long before he became the nation’s first president, Washington explored this area in the summer on 1754 as he traveled along what is now U.S. Route 40 – the same road that passes right in front of Nemacolin – to fight at Fort Necessity. During the opening action of the French and Indian War, this fort was attacked by French troops and a young Colonel Washington surrendered for the first and only time in his military career. Fort Necessity is located just 10 minutes down Route 40 from Nemacolin and today operates as a National Park site that explores the earliest days of Washington’s service to the colonies.

Route 40, better known as the Historic National Road, was constructed in the early 1800s as the first federally funded highway in the United States. This passage westward – from Maryland to Illinois – was used by countless settlers who traveled the same path outlined by Washington and British Major General Edward Braddock nearly six decades earlier. In 2002 the Federal Highway Administration designated the route an All-American Road, and these days it’s a popular road trip for travelers who have a keen interest in the country’s earliest history.

Nemacolin’s townhomes are the ideal location for families, friends and even corporate groups seeking a more secluded and private setting for their adventures in the Laurel Highlands. Each unit includes a full kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, two and half baths, a laundry room, a balcony or deck, and private parking. For those who can’t imagine a getaway without their four-legged family members, some of the townhomes welcome dogs less than 50 pounds. The bold décor of these units embraces the colonial heritage of the Laurel Highlands and celebrates the roles of Washington, Braddock and also Chief Nemacolin, the Delaware Indian credited with originally exploring this region and its routes and for whom the resort is named. The profiles of all three men are incorporated into the townhomes’ custom wallpaper, and a silhouette of Washington – with his words scripted within – graces a wall of each unit.

The kitchens feature timber walls and hand-carved tables and chairs sourced from Pennsylvania’s Amish community, while the bedrooms and living spaces are decorated in brilliant tones of red, white and blue. The signature plaid that appears in nearly every room gives each home a feeling of true Americana, and wall décor in the living room includes a giant American flag and a quilt print. All of these elements combine to create an ode to American folk art.

In addition, the kitchen ceiling of the Washington Townhomes incorporates “morning star” symbols that are a part of Native American culture. Native Americans use signs and symbols to tell stories, and different tribes have a geometric portrayal of the morning star – the brightest star in the sky at dawn – to convey important concepts. For some it represents hope and guidance, for others it speaks of courage and purity of spirt, and for still others it symbolizes the resurrection of past heroes – people such as Chief Nemacolin.
