Newport Mansions Season in Full Swing

Visitors will be able to enjoy new audio tours of The Elms and Rosecliff, a new exhibition at Rosecliff, and a variety of special events ranging from the Newport Flower Show, to a children's party at Green Animals, to the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival.

Now operating daily are The Breakers, Chateau-sur-Mer, Chepstow, The Elms, Green Animals Topiary Garden, Hunter House, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Marble House and Rosecliff. All houses will remain open daily through Columbus Day, October 10, 2016 From October 11 to November 18, 2016, The Breakers, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Marble House and Rosecliff will be open daily. From November 19 to January 1, 2017, The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House and Rosecliff will remain open daily. The Breakers Stable & Carriage House will be open daily from June 25 to Labor Day, September 5, 2016.

Also now open at Rosecliff is the new exhibition, Splendor at Sea: The Golden Age of Steam Yachting in America, which highlights the luxurious private yachts of the era's industrial tycoons - floating palaces that were as richly furnished and elegant as their fabled mansions. The exhibition will be open daily through January 1, 2017.

The Preservation Society has also introduced a free mobile app, offering its visitors a way to enhance their audio tour experience using their own smart devices. The mobile app is available for download as "NewportMansions" through the app store for both Apple and Android devices. It includes photos as well as text to accompany the audio tours at The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, and later this summer, The Elms.

June 9: Lecture: The Vanderbilts Go Yachting

6:00 p.m., Rosecliff

Author and marine historian John Rousmaniere will bring to life the story of four generations of Vanderbilts, who were famous for their spectacular yachts and the great variety of ways in which they were used. Admission is $10 for Preservation Society members, general admission $15. Advance reservations required.

June 24-26: The Newport Flower Show: Gilded-Artful Living

Friday 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Rosecliff

In its 21st year, New England's premier summer flower show showcases an era when the goal was to embellish and enhance what nature had already provided, and nearly every aspect of life was elevated to an art form. Enjoy judged horticultural specimens and floral designs, special garden displays, free lectures and demonstrations, children's activities, and exclusive shopping experiences. Special guests include designer Bunny Williams and international floral artist Bruno Duarte. Advance sale single day admission is $20. Additional ticket packages available.


July 7: The Angela Moore Fashion Show & Champagne Brunch: Seaside Sensations

9:30 a.m., Rosecliff
Designer Angela Moore presents a colorful fashion show and brunch in the ballroom of Rosecliff, featuring nautical and resort fashions modeled by Newport style stars and VIP guests. The show will also include an exclusive one-day-only exhibit of nautical and seaside fashions from the Preservation Society's historic collection. Admission is $90 for Preservation Society members, general admission $100. Advance reservations required.

July 14: Green Animals Children's Party

4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Green Animals Topiary Garden, Portsmouth

Children and adults are invited to frolic in the whimsical and historic topiary garden overlooking Narragansett Bay in Portsmouth, with music, rides, food and fun. Admission: Member Adult $20, Member Youth free; Non-Member Adult $25, Non-Member Youth (6-17 years) $10; Children 5 & Under Free (Member & Non-Member). Tickets sold at the door.

July 28: Lecture: A Legacy of Innovation: Herreshoff Steam Yachts and Naval Vessels

5:00 p.m., Rosecliff

Naval architect Halsey Herreshoff, grandson of legendary yacht designer Nathanial Greene Herreshoff, will explore the tremendous impact the development of steam power had on the world of naval and yachting vessels during the Gilded Age. Admission is $10 for Preservation Society members, general admission $15. Advance reservations required.

August 1: Golf Outing

Newport National Golf Club

August 2: The John Greenville Winslow Lecture & Reception: A Brief History of the American Academy in Rome Through the Lens of Historic Preservation

Adele Chatfield-Taylor, President Emerita of the American Academy of Rome will tell the story of a quarter-century multi-dimensional historic preservation effort. Admission is $15 for Preservation Society members, general admission $20. Advance reservations required.

August 13: Summer Dinner Dance: The Grand Voyage

The Preservation Society's annual summer fundraising gala celebrates Newport's Golden Age of yachting.

September 22-25: Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival

New events, including a Vintner Dinner, a Bordeaux Dinner and a Jazz Brunch have been added to this spectacular weekend, which also features a two-day Grand Tasting at Marble House with hundreds of wines, cooking demonstrations from national and regional chefs, a gala celebration at Rosecliff, plus seminars, auctions, and more. Various ticket packages are available.
