First opened on August 19, 1978, Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore's Garden Wing was famous for its bougainvillea-laden terraced balconies. In October 2011, the Garden Wing was closed for eight months in preparation for its rebirth as Singapore's only urban resort. The S$66 million (approximately US$51.3 million) renovation includes the complete refitting of all the guestrooms and suites as well as the creation of Singapore's first CHI, The Spa and a new dining concept called Waterfall Garden Café. A new event venue called The Deck is the perfect outdoor venue. The Garden Wing's nature-inspired design is the work of Singapore-based Maps Design.

The Garden Wing's main design element is nature. Capitalizing on its location amidst 15 acres of lush tropical gardens, the Garden Wing's decoration incorporates environmental considerations. Solar panels provide heating for the Garden Wing's water system while a water catchment facility helps to irrigate the gardens and prevent wastage of precious water. Electrical devices installed in all guestrooms, such as automated air conditioning sensors for the balcony door and the key card controlled lighting system, help to optimize energy consumption.
