Visit Stuttgart's Amazing Museums this Summer
Ranging from the glass cube of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart that houses unique German art and the square white house by Le Corbusier showcasing the Weissenhofsiedlung to the classy car museums for Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, these state-of-the art modern museums are destination-musts. The architecture of the museums alone make them extraordinary but visitors soon realize that the collections of these museums are deep, varied and well-presented.

State-of-the-art automobile museums, including Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and the workshop of Daimler and Maybach and the Daimler House, offer unique automobile experiences combining history and innovation. Historic racing cars, excellent audio guides, delicious dining and wonderful gift shops make the museums delightful for the entire family. Being the birthplace of the automobile, there is Gottlieb Daimler's workshop and home as well as a car-themed hotel surrounded by vintage cars, called the V-8, where visitors can stay for a complete gear head experience.

Built in 2006, the Mercedes-Benz Museum (pictured at top) mesmerizes visitors with its collection of luxury cars that belonged to famous people, including Princess Diana, the Pope and Emperor Hirohito. Record winning cars, such as the Blitzen-Benz and Formula One winners, are on display. A fabulous summer event is the "Starry Night" when the top floor of the museum is transformed into a restaurant and diners can enjoy the museum and views of the beautiful countryside.

Porsche Museum

The Porsche Museum opened in 2009 with an angular and futuristic design. The 80 racing and sports cars on display are in perfect running condition and are used at exhibitions and old-timer races. Visitors can watch the skilled mechanics at work on the cars in the museum's own workshop. The museum's workshop and historical archive is a wonderful resource for journalists, engineers and serious car lovers and there is a factory next door that visitors can tour.

Weissenhof Estate

Another one-of-a-kind museum, the Weissenhof Estate, started as a residential development created by 17 world-renown architects in 1927, including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Hans Scharoun, Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier; it is one of the most significant landmarks left by the movement known as "Neues Bauen.” Today on the website, visitors can take a virtual tour of Le Corbusier's house and read about the famous exhibition and see wonderful photos.

Kunstmuseum Stuttgart

Visitors also enjoy the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, the art museum, which is appreciated for its wonderful glass cube format. It hangs over the palace square in the center of Stuttgart and has extensive collections of Swabian impressionists, avant-garde painters, along with a number of concrete art examples, and one of the largest collections of the German expressionist and satirists, Otto Dix. Stuttgart is in fact a mecca for museum lovers, car enthusiasts and culture vultures seeking something different that they cannot find anywhere else.
