Visitors yearning for ancient history and a sense of yesteryear will find much to delight in Xi'an. Aside from the Terracotta Army and the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, founder of the first unified empire in Chinese history, there is plenty to see and experience in the area. In this ancient capital city for 16 dynasties, every piece of brick tells a story. The restored ancient city wall, said to be the world's largest and one of the grandest surviving military defensive systems in history, creates a 14 kilometre stone ribbon around the city on which travellers can clamber to the top of and explore. While enjoying these sights, be enthralled by Qinqiang opera artists who perform traditional folk opera in the groves, under pavilions and on cobble-stoned trails.

Other landmarks include the Huaqing Hot Springs Palace located at the foot of Li Shan Mountain just 10 minutes from the resort, famous for being the site where romance blossomed between Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei during the Tang Dynasty. For those looking for adventure, a day trip to the nearby Huashan mountain, one of China's five greatest mountains and infamous for its 50-metre plank walk, 1,000 metres above the ground, is a must. If that's not scary enough, the plank measures just 50 centimetres wide.

If that is not enough, five historical sites have been put on the latest list of World Heritage Sites in June 2014 including the Han Weiyang and Tang Daming Palace ruins, the Xingjiao Temple Pagoda, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

Another attraction of Xi'an is its claim as one of China's great culinary hotspots. Its geographical position at the centre of the country, as well as being a key destination on the Silk Road, allowed cuisine from the north and south to establish roots alongside exotic international offerings. Today, its intoxicating night markets are abuzz with locals and visitors on the hunt for fried, boiled and steamed dumplings filled with a myriad of meat, cabbage and shallots; as well as roasted duck, grilled pancakes and pork buns served with cilantro and peanuts.

Xi'an also has a Muslim Quarter going back to the days when culture and trade brought all of the world religions together. Here, “Muslim Street” hawkers still sell spicy cumin mutton offal soup and liang pi cold noodles with chicken, peppers and parsley.
