The Peninsula Hong Kong Partners with The Royal Academy of Arts
The collaboration will see The Peninsula and the RA co-commissioning and co-presenting a public art installation in Hong Kong by leading British sculptor Richard Wilson RA. The first initiative in a planned annual partnership between The Peninsula and the RA, Wilson's work is timed to coincide with the third edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, and is set to be on show at the hotel from 12 March to 8 April 2015.

This illustrious partnership builds on last year’s successful launch of “Love Art at The Peninsula”, a groundbreaking programme of public art events and culinary happenings that included the creation of an animated neon installation on the façade of the hotel by British contemporary artist Tracey Emin RA, as well as a work suspended in the lobby by esteemed Chinese artist Su Xiaobai.

This year's partnership is in keeping with the RA’s recent collaborations with cultural and educational institutions across Asia. These have included exhibitions in Singapore, Japan, Qatar and Australia; an artist exchange programme between Hong Kong-based not-for-profit Arts in Heritage Research Limited and the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and a student exchange programme with Tokyo University of the Arts. The RA has also launched an art-handling training scheme in conjunction with Art Basel Hong Kong.

Prior to this, the RA launched a professional development programme for Hong Kong arts professionals in partnership with the Hong Kong government in 2012, and it has been behind a number of high-profile artist’s talks in the city over the past two years.

The collaboration is a further testament to the continuing commitment of Hong Kong's Grande Dame to Hong Kong’s thriving art scene, which has burgeoned in recent years through the launch of Art Basel in Hong Kong and the opening of a slew of major international galleries. The hotel's partnership with RA underscores Kowloon's development as an arts hub, in addition to large-scale projects such as the forthcoming opening of the West Kowloon Cultural District unveiling M+, Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture, and the renovation of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, situated opposite the hotel. Bolstered by an increasingly voracious appetite for art in the region and a growing number of relevant cultural programmes, Hong Kong is evolving to take its role as Asia’s reigning art hub.
