Top 10 Reasons to Visit Brussels, Belgium

-

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the administrative centre of the European Union. This has earned the city the title of the Capital of Europe.

Brussels gets its character from the coexistence of French and Flemish culture, and is now home to nationalities from around the world, adding a cosmopolitan flavor to its atmosphere. The vibe of Brussels is further enhanced by picturesque medieval streets, lively squares, beautiful boulevards, impressive monuments, spacious parks, cozy cafés, fabulous restaurants and an active cultural life.

1. Brussels (and all of Belgium) is a foodie's/gourmet paradise. Eating is a national obsession - you don't necessarily have to go into one of the country's Michelin-starred restaurants to enjoy delicious, imaginatively prepared food. You'll also find an incredible variety of local specialities - as well as internationally inspired cuisine - everywhere you go. Belgium is particularly famous for waffles and chips. Belgian chips are often eaten with mayonnaise or served with mussels. Chicory is a popular vegetable, as are, of course, Brussels sprouts. Sea food is plentiful and trout is fished in the rivers. Soups include waterzooi which is more like a stew. Beer features in a number of recipes.

2. Belgium produces 172,000 tons of chocolate per year in over 2,130 chocolate shops. The chocolate has a pure cocoa flavor because in Belgium they don't use vegetable shortening.

3. There are over 400 different types of beer in Belgium running the gamut from white to raspberry beer. Most beers have their own glass in which only that beer may be served. Some of the most famous are made by Trappist monks.

4. Brussels is a major cultural destination with various museums, exhibitions and events throughout the year. Magritte Museum is opening June 2nd. Flemish primitives: Van Dyck.

5. Brussels city sights include the Grand Place, Centre of European Politics, home of comics eg Tin Tin. Tours geared for any age can be arranged.

6. Antique fairs in the Brussels neighborhood of Sablon; contemporary and classic art pieces spread over lively squares and small streets; bric brac markets.

7. Brussels offers Art Nouveau and Art Deco architectural history by famous architects such as Henry van de Velde and Victor Horta.

8. Brussels has a lively nightlife with many bars and intimate Brussels-style cafés.

9. There are many events happening throughout the year that make Brussels special every time you visit, including Arts, Classical Music, Film, Festivals & Heritage, Kids & Family, Christmas Markets...

10. Easily connected to London, Paris, Amsterdam and German cities by plane and high speed trains. Brussels is the Hub of Europe.
