TORO restaurant opens in Smyth Tribeca - a Thompson Hotel
TORO, the Spanish word for bull, is a stylish lounge discretely nestled underneath French brasserie Plein Sud. TORO is conceptually designed to pay homage to the town of Arles in the Camargue region of Southern France, which was a retreat to the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Ernest Hemingway.

This vibrant Provence was made legendary by the arts and the French cultural tradition of bullfighting. The town of Arles was an attractive destination for Vincent van Gogh as he was fascinated by the Provencal landscapes. He produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there, including The Night Cafe, Starry Night Over the Rhone, and L'Arlésienne. Sharing the Spanish tradition of bull fighting, the region of Camargue is known for its gypsy culture and ranches where wild horses and bulls are bred.

Located at the corner of West Broadway and Chambers streets in Manhattan's sophisticated Tribeca neighborhood, TORO embodies the ultimate in refined rural style prevalent in Southern France. Crafted by renowned design firm AvroKo, TORO features weathered wood paneling, rustic terracotta tiles and black leather and vibrant red fabrics which boast the colors of a traditional bullfighter's uniform. Authentic matadors' capes draped along the rear wall create a dynamic focal point in the room.

Upbeat yet discreet, TORO will be a welcome alternative to the ordinary lounge experience drawing an eclectic mix of people reminiscent of the old New York. Offering patrons a rhythmic atmosphere, a DJ will be spinning a unique combination of soul and vibrant beats Thursday- Saturday nights. With moderately priced cocktails ($12-$16) TORO will go back to the basics of a premium nightlife experience, delicious drinks shared with interesting company. Influenced by the essence of Southern France, drinks will be infused with spices including fennel, lavender and orange zest and fruits such as figs, melons and blood orange native to the region. Innovative signature cocktails include the Rouge, a blood orange caipirinha, and the Fraise & Basilic, which infuses cabana cachaca, a strawberry puree, basil and lime juice.

TORO is located at 85 West Broadway in New York City, 212-204-5555. The lounge is open Monday through Friday serving cocktails from 5PM – 2AM, Saturday from 8PM - 2AM and is closed on Sundays with the exception of special events. Reservations suggested but not required.
