Ariau Amazon Towers Hotel

ROOMS & SUITES: 210

A 15-minute helicopter ride up the Rio Negro river from Brazil's Amazon-gateway town of Manaus, this fantastical 210-suite hotel perches on stilts, at treetop level. Favored by such bigwigs as Jacques Cousteau, Bill Gates and Helmut Kohl.

The Ariau Amazon Towers Hotel is located 35 miles from Manaus, Brazil at the confluence of the Rio Negro and Ariau Creek. Built entirely at the level of Rainforest Canopy, Ariau's towers are linked together by 4 miles of sturdy wooden catwalks. EXPLORE

Amazon - What distinguishes the Amazon from other tropical rain forests is the sheer number of plant and animal species that make their home here. Biologically, it is the richest and most diverse region in the world. Not only is it the most diverse, but the Amazon is also the largest tropical rain forest in the world, covering 2.3 million square miles over nine countries, including Peru, Columbia, Venezuela, and Bolivia. The largest portion, about 60%, falls within Brazil's borders.

GETTING THERE

Ariau is located 35 miles up the Rio Negro from Manaus, about 2 and a half hours by typical river boat. Heliport on property.

What to bring: A small daypack; binoculars; a light rain jacket; a few sealable plastic bags to protect camera gear, notebook, and so on...in a sudden downpour, everything gets soaked; good walking shoes; sunglasses and sunscreen (the glare from the river can be quite strong when you're on the boat, and you should be careful of sunburn when you're at your lodge or hotel; enough dry clothes - nothing dries once it's damp, so have a couple of changes of shirts and socks; medicinal items for personal use - aspirin, antacid, etc. (lodges and tour operators will have proper first aid kits).
