Rooms & Suites: 26

Located in the historic centre of Puebla, a colonial city on the road between Mexico City and Oaxaca, is the new incarnation of a late 19th-century factory long used to purify water for the production of ice.

The building's tradition of purity is still the guiding leitmotif at the simple and minimalist yet modern and edgy La Purificadora: Famous for his use of bright colours, natural light and thick walls, renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta took on the project as a challenge. Limiting himself entirely to the colours of black and white, he used materials like stone from the original construction, old wood, onyx and specially fabricated floor tile in creating the hotel's public spaces, which include a roof terrace with an artist-rendered 30-metre pool as well as ground-floor patio, restaurant, library and wine cellar. Elements found by an onsite archaeologist, such as bottles and glass fragments, are also incorporated into the hotel's construction and graphic design. Most of hotel's 26 guestrooms – including three suites – offer spectacular views of the city, which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As would be expected from innovative Mexican hotelier Carlos Couturier and the always boundary-breaking Habita hotel group, La Purificadora offers travellers and locals alike a comforting yet always stimulating experience – a mix of tradition and contemporary flavour in its purest form.
