EXPLORE
Cuernavaca, the capital of the State of Morelos, is known for its splendid private gardens and magnificent vistas of the surrounding mountains. It is located 85 kilometers south of Mexico City and may be reached by car or bus, enjoying a pleasant drive through pine forests and small villages. At an altitude of 5,000 feet, it is 724 meters lower than Mexico City and its spring-like weather all year round, have made it a popular retreat since the days when the Aztec nobility lived there.
There are countless excursions to be made within Cuernavaca, including the Potter's community of San Anton, Teopanzolco Pyramid, Borda Garden, etc. In Cuernavaca itself, there is a flower festival in Spring and celebrations to mark the Day of the Dead on November 1st and 2nd each year.
You can also make excursions out of Cuernavaca to the picturesque village of Tepoztlán, with its steep cobbled streets and ruins in the surrounding National Park, the Olmec-style rock carvings of Chalcatzingo and Xochicalco Pyramids. The really adventurous may wish to climb the Popocatepetl.
Further ahead, but still manageable as a day trip are Lake Tequesquitengo, the sulphur baths of Texuitla, the Cacahuamilpa Caves, among the largest in the country and the silver town of Taxco, famous for its colonial architecture and winding narrow streets. Mexican towns have numerous fiestas throughout the year and it is worth checking the dates of festivals and processions while planning your visit.
