Rooms & Suites: 183

Originally built below Camelback Mountain in 1959, Mountain Shadows reemerged as an icon of luxury and design after it was completely rebuilt in 2017.

Located near Scottsdale in Paradise Valley, echoes of the resort’s historic legacy and the stunning desert surroundings create an energy of renewal that draws you into this unique destination. The resort features timeless modern design, 183 guestrooms, a restaurant with an exhibition kitchen, two pools, a high-tech fitness facility, a fully revamped short golf course, a golf grill and lounge as well as 37,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space. A luxury wing with 42 resort condominiums and suites opens in late 2017. Mountain Shadows first opened in 1959, with the golf course following in 1961. It was an immediate icon of desert luxury, prior to the incorporation of the town of Paradise Valley in 1961. After many successful years and famous visitors, the property was demolished in 2014. Westroc Hospitality, whose current Phoenix-area properties include Sanctuary Resort and Hotel Valley Ho, partnered with Woodbine Development to rebuild the resort from the ground up, while the original golf course has been fully revamped by renowned golf course architect Forrest Richardson, protege of the original course designer Arthur Jack Snyder.

Wow Factors

• A Hollywood Past: The resort is steeped in the history of its previous namesake hotel, which welcomed Hollywood stars including Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Robert Stack, and Del Webb. • Standout Design: The walls of The Gallery at Mountain Shadows are adorned with rotating artwork from artists with a strong tie to Arizona, bringing in new museum-quality exhibitions every two months, including a special Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit in November to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his birth. • Guestrooms are works of art, with bold and unmistakable elements with no detail overlooked, from geometric lighting, plush bedding and open floor plans with floor-to-ceiling glass to an in-room cocktail cart with recipe menu and artwork of authentic vintage postcards. One suite in particular offers unparalleled views of Camelback Mountain from a freestanding luxurious bathtub in the room. • The Citizens Club & Juice Bar: Named after the group of Arizona residents who founded the Town of Paradise Valley in 1961, The Citizens Club is a 4,000-square-foot high-tech wellness center offering an array of fitness classes including aerial yoga and moonlight rooftop yoga along with two, 75-foot pools boasting dramatic mountain views. The Club’s juice bar serves fresh, organic ingredients paired in perfect blends including The Black Magic, a special active charcoal juice. Outdoor adventure awaits travelers with hike-skip access to Camelback and Mummy Mountains. • Golf: Mountain Shadows boasts the only 18-hole, par-3 course in Arizona. The updated layout pays homage to the original with challenging greens, rugged slopes, distinct holes and beautiful views of Camelback Mountain.
