This top U.S. eco-lodge boasts not only luxury accommodations incorporating the reduce-reuse-recycle “three Rs” but the best of conservation-minded Montana outdoor activities on 26,000 acres of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Oh-so-civilized amenities range from elite guided fly fishing, trail rides and chef-prepared picnics to gourmet organic meals, free trade organic linens and a weekly guest speaker series. Guests curious about the lodge's seriously conservation-minded mission can enjoy a green tour of the holistic ranch where over 100 miles of barbed wire have been removed, a fish hatchery saves native trout and cattle are grazed progressively by cowboys on horseback. Additional eco-features include a solar-powered boiler providing piping hot water to the lodge and a program that plants 10 rainforest trees per guest visit through Trees for Travel.

With a mere 16 guests at capacity—comfortably ensconced in six lodge rooms and two historic cabins—the lodge's staff-to-guest ratio hovers around 2:1, so pampering is part of the package. Rates start from $900 per person, double occupancy, for a three-night basic Sun Ranch package (activities priced a la carte) in a deluxe lodge room and including chef-prepared fresh, organic and locally sourced meals.
