Rooms & Suites: 67

At the end of the Hana Highway, on the lush eastern coast of Maui, is the Travaasa Hana (formerly the legendary Hotel Hana-Maui and Honua Spa).

The former Hotel Hana-Maui on the island's windward side has reopened as the Travaasa Hana under Denver-based Travaasa Destinations. This is Travaasa's second property, after Travaasa Austin, which opened in Texas' Hill Country in mid-April. The Hana property features 70 cottages and suites, a wellness spa, locally sourced food, and programming that highlights Hawaii's cultural heritage. Guests can choose from two offerings -- an all-inclusive program which includes meals, a daily spa credit and as many activities as they wish, or an á la carte stay. Travaasa Hana incorporates local and regional elements while encompassing the brand’s five pillars -- adventure, culinary, culture, fitness and spa/wellness. Accommodations at Travaasa Hana consist of 47 plantation-style Sea Ranch Cottages and 23 low-rise bungalow Garden View Suites. The guestrooms feature organic linens and are free of radios, clocks and televisions. The Sea Ranch Cottages have high, wood-beamed ceilings, as well as interior ceiling fans and private lanais. Many also feature private hot tubs. The minimum age requirement for Sea Ranch Cottage guests is 16 years old. Programming includes net fishing demonstrations, hula and ukulele lessons, lei making, coconut husking, guided coastal and garden walks, bicycle tours, stand-up paddle boarding, outrigger canoe paddling, costal workouts and digital photography classes. The Spa at Travaasa Hana infuses native Hawaiian treatments with exercise as part of its holistic approach to relaxation and wellness and utilizes locally made and organic products. The Ka'uiki dining room features ocean-to-table cuisine and fresh organic fare by Executive Chef Barry Villiarimo, who was born and raised in Hana. Utilizing ingredients like taro, breadfruit, sweet potatoes, coconut milk and fern shoots in his menus, Villiarimo honors the traditions of native Hawaiians who depended on the mountains and ocean for food.

Getting There

In addition to driving the famous "Road to Hana," guests can fly directly into Hana (HNM) from Kahului, Honolulu Int'l Airport (HNL) or other inter-island airports. The Hana Airport is open to private planes. The Hotel Hana-Maui provides complimentary shuttle service to and from the Hana Airport, located approximately 3 miles away. Advance notice is required. TRANSPORTATION: All major car rental companies are available at Kahului Airport (OGG). Hana Highway - The Road to Hana - This drive is considered one of the "top 10 most beautiful drives in North America". The road generally follows the old King's trail. Even if you are not staying in Hana this drive is highly recommended to all Maui tourists as the area is considered to be the essence of Maui. It is like leaving the island. The Hana road is 52 miles, and can take from two hours to two-and-a-half hours depending on how often you stop. The famed highway begins when you leave the town of Pa'ia on hwy. 36. During your drive you cross over 66 one-lane bridges. The road has recently been resurfaced and is in excellent condition. Spectacular lush scenery is all along the road. There are many scenic places to stop and view waterfalls, mini cascades, eucalyptus groves, and bamboo jungles. There are a few roadside fruit stands to stop and stretch your legs. This side of Haleakala is the moist side. When you arrive in Hana you will feel like you are in "heaven," which is why it is called "Heavenly Hana" so frequently. If you don't have overnight reservations, be sure to stop and have lunch in the Hotel Hana-Maui's Ka'uiki overlooking the Hana Bay. It is well worth the stop.
