Accompanied by a private art historian guide, they will join the key keeper as he collects his 300 keys and performs the solemn rite of opening the doors to each of the 300 gates of the Vatican museums before switching on the lights of the sacred Sistine Chapel.
Completed in 1512, the Sistine Chapel’s famous ceilings and walls reflect the attitudes of society at the time: from the Renaissance love of the human body, to the tension between wealth and faith, and finally the permeation of religion and the Bible through the daily lives of much of the world. As such, the ceilings in this iconic building are considered to be the embodiment of the peak of Renaissance art, and Michelangelo’s use of bold colors and striking composition still awe viewers today with the sheer emotion conveyed in those simple brush strokes.
