How to Increase Your Odds of Seeing the Northern Lights

When traveling to the Arctic, a thing on most travelers' bucket list is seeing the famous Northern Lights dance through the night sky. While seeing the phenomenon is not always guaranteed, embarking on Aurora Expeditions’ 22-day Northern Lights Voyage will allow travelers to increase their odds, where trekkers will venture around remote areas in Norway, Greenland and Iceland that are renowned for seeing the multicolored spectacle.

Taking place September 1 - 22, 2023, the voyage kicks off near the North Cape in Norway, Europe’s northernmost point. During the trek, voyagers are urged to keep their eyes toward the night sky in hopes of witnessing the dazzling light show, though this won't be the only awe-inspiring sight they’ll see on their adventure.

  • While venturing along the Norwegian Coast in Norway, travelers will Zodiac cruise through spectacular Trollfjord, a gorge flanked by steep mountains and so narrow that it can only be accessed by small ship.
  • The approach to Jan Mayen, Norway is absolutely spectacular with the sight of the huge Beerenberg volcano, known as the world’s northernmost active volcano. The island is also known as a great place for dolphin and whale spotting.
  • Along the glacier-covered eastern coast of Greenland, visit the Inuit village of Ittoqqortoormiit, the most isolated and northernmost permanent settlement in the region and explore Scoresbysund, the world's largest fjord system and favorite hunting ground of the local Inuit.
  • In Iceland, explore the Westfjords region, which features outstanding landscapes with sheer, table-top mountains that plunge into the sea and pristine north Atlantic vegetation. Plus, visit Hornstrandir peninsula, one of Iceland’s most remote and pristine regions.
  • Discover a few of the gems of the Faroe islands, located in the middle of the north Atlantic and not visible on most maps. One of the highlights in the Faroe Islands is Vestamma sea cliffs, which majestically rise hundreds of miles from the sea.

This is just a small example of what trekkers will experience aboard Aurora’s Northern Lights Explorer. In true expedition style, Aurora’s experienced Expedition Team will use their expertise to tailor the voyage to suit the day-to-day conditions allowing them to make best use of prevailing weather, ice conditions and any opportunities for wildlife encounters and viewing the Northern Lights.
