The Dorchester Unveils Decorated Facade to Celebrate His Majesty The King's Coronation

In celebration of His Majesty The King's Coronation, The Dorchester has unveiled its grand coronation decorations on the hotel's famous facade which were inspired by those of the 1953 coronation.

The decorations took 6 months to plan and are created using 480 meters of theater velvet, 54 oversize swags adoring the balconies and are complete with a 10ft crown which takes center stage on top of the building. The Coronation decorations mark the start of the celebrations which will continue throughout the hotel to honor His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort, including a celebratory afternoon tea and speciality menus.

The original decorations for HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953 were created by British stage set designer Oliver Messel and were said to be the best in London. That same year the designer unveiled a luxury suite within The Dorchester, which to this day remains as designed by Messel and is protected by the hotel. Messel’s design for the coronation decorations included dramatic draping across the hotel’s balconies, created to make the hotel’s concave façade look like the interior of a theater seen from the stage.
