Why These Dark-Sky Destinations Should be on Every Stargazer’s Radar

Booking.com’s 2025 trend report found that 62% of travelers are prioritizing trips to darker sky locations, and with major celestial events on the horizon including the Eta Aquarids in May, the Perseids in August, and a trio of fall supermoons, now feels like the perfect time to spotlight some of the country’s top spots for catching moon rays. From moonlit snowshoe hikes in Big Sky to private stargazing sessions in Sonoma, the destinations below offer some of the best conditions for skywatching, paired with resorts that make the experience feel extra special.

Yasawa Islands, Fiji

A private island in the South Pacific Ocean is an idyllic destination for travelers to avoid light pollution and reconnect with the natural world. At Turtle Island Fiji, the Private Mountain Top Dinner invites guests to experience the island’s beauty and rich culture after dark. This unforgettable evening begins with a twilight hike up Mount Ford, before arriving at a lively mountaintop celebration where guests can enjoy cocktails, dancing, and a communal dinner under a starlit sky. At Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, guests can take in the stars from a new private glass stargazing dome situated by the ocean.

Big Sky, Montana
With little to no light pollution and sweeping alpine terrain, Big Sky offers some of the darkest skies in the continental United States. The high elevation and dry air make it a prime spot for witnessing meteor showers like the Perseids and Orionids. At Montage Big Sky, guests can take it further with the Moonlight Snowshoe Hike, a guided after-dark trek through the Spanish Peaks that pairs wilderness immersion with stargazing serenity. Healdsburg, California
Sonoma’s open landscapes and low light interference make Healdsburg an unexpectedly great spot for celestial viewing. Montage Healdsburg offers Stargazing Among the Vines, a private 1.5-hour telescope experience led by a professional guide. Set on the vineyard lawn and using observatory-grade equipment, guests can spot planets, galaxies, and deep space objects between spring and early fall. Imagery (credit: Montage Healdsburg)

Park City, Utah
With its high elevation and wide-open views of the Wasatch Range, Park City offers ideal conditions for seasonal stargazing. On August 12, Montage Deer Valley will host a Star Party on the resort’s Compass Lawn during the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Guests can take in the show alongside astronomers from the Utah Valley Astronomical Club, with bites from SlopeStream and Veuve Clicquot pours from the newly unveiled Après Lounge.  Night owls and love birds alike can head to Spa Montage for the Serenity Night Venture for Two, a four-hour experience that features a couple’s mineral soak and restorative massage, followed by a chef-prepared dinner served poolside at Spa Mosaic. Vail, Colorado
Fall in Vail brings crisp, clear skies and minimal atmospheric interference, making it one of Colorado’s most scenic stargazing backdrops. The Hythe provides easy access to high-elevation trails and wide-open skies, ideal for viewing seasonal meteor activity or a quiet alpine moonrise.

Maui, Hawai‘i
Maui’s equatorial position allows for views of constellations not visible from the mainland. On clear nights, the skies above Montage Kapalua Bay offer expansive coastal views, while nearby Haleakalā provides one of the most unique stargazing experiences in the country. Fall evenings and the December supermoon are especially atmospheric times to visit. Imagery (credit: Montage Kapalua Bay)
