Discover Canada's Ancient Cultures with Outer Shores Expeditions
Each epic voyage sails through Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands, an archipelago of more than 300 islands and islets and home to a cornucopia of diverse ecosystems and wildlife. Here, ravens drop clams from the sky, gray whales sift the shallows for herring roe, black bears feed on shellfish at low tide, killer whales patrol kelp forests on the hunt for seals and salmon, and ancient cedar trees tower over rich rocky shores. The five-day expeditions depart April 26 to May 1, 2015 and May 2 to 6, 2015.

Because of St. Claire's award-winning archaeological research in conjunction with his research associate, Dr. Alan D. McMillan, Barkley Sound ranks among the most extensively studied regions of the Pacific Northwest coast. He conducted in-depth interviews with more than 20 elders from eight Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations regarding traditional ways of life, territories, site usage and traditional Nuu-chah-nulth place names. More recently, St. Claire served as a member of the Tseshaht First Nation team negotiating aboriginal traditional rights and title with provincial and federal governments. As an expert interpreter aboard select Pacific Rim National Park expeditions, St. Claire will offer a unique insider perspective of the islands, beaches, forests and waters of this region.

Traveling aboard the luxurious wooden schooner Passing Cloud, guests search for black bears, gray whales, orcas, sea lions and sea otters, trek through old-growth rainforests, kayak over underwater kelp forests, and encounter the rich cultural heritage of the local Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations.
