  1. César Manrique Foundation. Tahíche

César Manrique designed the famously known Volcano House in Lanzarote upon his arrival from New York. The César Manrique Foundation is headquartered here in this house where César decided to reside as his permanent destination. He lived here for approximately 20 years of time from the year 1968 to 1988 and this was the longest time span of his life when he lived in a single place. It is located in the middle of a lava coulee which was developed due to the eruptions occurred in nearby volcanoes. These eruptions rocked the whole island during the 1730s. It’s a building which coexists with the natural surroundings and is situated on 3000 square meters of the land where the architecture blends perfectly with the volcano in its proximity. The upper portion of the building is a representation of Lanzarote’s traditions which includes architecture based on large rooms with wide windows and graceful overhead lightning.

When it comes to the lower portion of the building, it’s built on volcanic bubbles. These bubbles have been developed naturally and are interconnected through the tunnels which were excavated due to flow of the lava. They develop a habitable setting between these natural spaces which is quite surprising. Visitors are allowed into the open spaces which are surrounded by abundant plant life and include the swimming pool, ballroom etc. A room is located at the exit of the house and has been converted into an exhibition hall for the paintings but it was formerly used as a painting studio by César during his life.
