Paris may be the ultimate destination for art, history, and romance, but just an hour outside the city lies one of France’s most delightful side trips—the Champagne region. We spoke with Professor Steve Solosky, The Traveling Professor, who has been leading small group tours to Paris for over 15 years, about his favorite day trips. His first recommendation? A toast to Reims and Épernay, the two sparkling jewels of Champagne country.
Why Visit the Champagne Region from Paris?
A train ride from Paris’s Gare de l’Est brings you into the rolling vineyards of Champagne in just 45–75 minutes. Whether you choose Reims or Épernay, both towns offer world-class Champagne tastings, fascinating history, and plenty of French countryside charm.
Steve advises travelers to book Champagne tours and tastings in advance—especially on weekends, holidays, and during peak season. “Two, maybe three Champagne houses in a day is plenty,” he says, noting that each visit offers generous pours and in-depth experiences.
Reims: History and Champagne in One Elegant City
If you’re short on time, Reims may be the better choice—it’s only 45 minutes from Paris by train. This lively city is larger than Épernay and offers more dining, shopping, and cultural options.
Steve’s top Champagne houses in Reims include:
Beyond Champagne, Reims is rich in history. On his small group tour to the Champagne region, he often likes to visit other sties. The Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where nearly every King and Queen of France was crowned. Just steps from the train station, the Museum of Surrender tells the story of General Eisenhower’s acceptance of Germany’s surrender in 1945, marking the official end of World War II in Europe.
💡 Tip: If you arrive in Reims without a tasting reservation, stop by the Tourist Information Center near the cathedral—they can help book same-day tours. Visit the Reims Tourism website for more info.
Épernay: Champagne Avenue and Walkable Tastings
For those who prefer a more intimate experience, Épernay is an excellent option. Located about 75 minutes from Paris, this charming town is home to the famous Avenue de Champagne, where prestigious houses line the street like sparkling jewels.
Steve’s favorite Champagne houses in Épernay are:
Unlike Reims, most Champagne houses in Épernay are within walking distance of the train station, making it easy to visit multiple tastings without a taxi. Steve notes that the tours in Épernay often feel a bit more personal and detailed, adding an extra sparkle to the experience.
Which Should You Choose: Reims or Épernay?
Either way, you’ll return to Paris with unforgettable memories—and maybe a bottle (or two) of Champagne to enjoy later.
