The couple worked with architects Kurt Magness and Roberto Sosa to transform their 1946 home into a modern, tranquil space celebrating the beauty of its surrounding landscape. Inspired by the pure sleek forms of midcentury French design, George Hensler combined the tenets of classic minimalism with island materials to create a space that he likes to describe as “Jeanneret Goes to the Beach.” Beach Cottage Maui is island-inspired without being island-themed.
This immaculately restored beachfront home features exposed beam ceilings and an open floor plan with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The exteriors are painted a rich dark green to blend into the surrounding lush vegetation.
The interior design of the home is clean and modern, making the most of this restored plantation cottage’s natural light and historic structure. Drawing from his experience in fashion, George Hensler collaborated with his friend and fashion industry colleague Rene Holguin of LA-based store RTH to source vintage fabrics to adorn the space. The owners also added new wood cladding throughout the home, painted a bright Benjamin Moore Dove White, to unify the space. The kitchen features updated simple white cabinetry with cement counter tops. Bathrooms feature modern cement tile, marble countertops, and steel casement windows find new life as shower enclosures.
With views of the West Maui Mountains and Kanaha Beach, the cottage’s indoor spaces blend into outdoor living areas. Nine sliding doors open up to a spacious wrap-around lanai providing magnificent vistas in all directions. On the wide porch, a lounge area is anchored by two Pierre Jeanneret chairs and a custom chaise lounge.
Lush jungles, hidden waterfalls, the bohemian town of Paia, and Kanaha Beach - known for world-class windsurfing and kite-surfing - are just a few of the local treasures located just minutes from Beach Cottage Maui. The home’s amenities include a gourmet kitchen, Wifi internet, A/C, cable TV, stereo, espresso machine, washer dryer, and more.
