Another landmark is the world-renowned Goodspeed Opera House. It is situated on the banks of Connecticut River and is the birthplace of some of the world's most famous musicals, including Annie, Man of La Mancha and Shenandoah. It was built in 1876 by William Goodspeed, a shipping and banking magnate and avid theatre lover.

On the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat tours, you can enjoy a train ride along the Connecticut River running from Essex to East Haddam. The train connects with the riverboat for a cruise along the Connecticut River, which offers breathtaking scenery and views of historic landmarks such as Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera House.

New for hiking enthusiasts is the "Gillette Castle Connection". It starts with a 30-minute train ride through the beautiful Connecticut River Valley. Next, passengers detrain at the Hadlyme Flag stop for a short walk to the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry. The Ferry transports passengers to the base of Gillette Castle State Park for a hike up a hill of moderately graded trails to the Castle.
