British Columbia's Sonora Resort Opens for the Season, May 1st

Sonora Resort, a luxury wilderness retreat located in British Columbia’s Discovery Islands, is ready to welcome guests for its 16th season starting Tuesday, May 1, 2018. The Relais & Chateâux property has a number of new initiatives launching this year, including a special Okanagan-collaborative wine weekend and a brand new cookbook by executive chef Lukas Gurtner.

“We had a record year in 2017 with visits from guests from all around the world,” says Sean Ross, president and COO of Sonora Resort. “Sonora Resort is truly a timeless location nestled in a Pacific archipelago. Our team is always excited for season’s launch because it is also when nature awakens from its slumber. Black bears, eagles, and whales are coming out to play, but so are all the salmon berry bushes, birds, and lush gardens. We have a great slate of new offerings this season, as well as continuing our high-level of hospitality.”

The Okanagan wine weekend is a Symphony for the Senses. Held on the last weekend of May, from May 25 to Sunday, May 27, 2018, Sonora Resort has partnered with award-winning Okanagan wineries LaStella and Le Vieux Pin for a special dinner featuring carefully curated wines by wine director Shane Lobsinger. The one-evening only menu showcases our talented kitchen team helmed by Gurtner and returning pastry chef Dominic Fortin. There will be live piano music by local musician Diane Froese. Guests are also invited to a Wine Tasting Master Class by Rasoul Salehi of Enotecca Wineries.

In addition to the wine weekend, Gurtner has been working diligently on a new Sonora Resort cookbook during the off-season. The cookbook is expected to launch mid-May and is a compilation of recipes from Sonora Resort chefs past and present, with a focus on Gurtner’s creations.

“May is definitely going to be an exciting first month for us,” says Donna James, general manager of Sonora Resort. “Although normally known as our low season, May has steadily been increasingly busy and popular with both local travellers and travellers from abroad. We are very excited about our wine dinner collaboration and celebrating local wines from British Columbia. And, we are equally as excited for the unveiling of our new cookbook.”

Sonora Resort lies within the heart of the intimate ecological meeting place where the North Pacific waters touch the coastal rainforests of B.C. Visitors can only travel to Sonora by way of helicopter, sea plane, or boat. The resort welcomes guests from all over the world and is a proud member of Relais & Chateâux, Virtuoso Hotels & Resorts, Condé Nast Johansens, Signature Travel Network, and a TripAdvisor 2016 Travelers’ Choice award winner.
