Croatia is experiencing an unprecedented surge in interest from North American travelers, with U.S. arrivals up 9% as of May this year. This sustained growth is driven by enhanced transatlantic accessibility, deepened travel trade partnerships, and an increasingly compelling portfolio of authentic, premium experiences that extend well beyond the beach.
Why American Travelers Are Choosing Croatia
At the heart of Croatia’s appeal is a combination of safety, accessibility, and diversity of experience. The country consistently ranks among Europe’s safest destinations, with cities such as Zagreb widely recognized for their welcoming atmosphere for families, couples, and solo travelers. Across Croatia's towns, villages, and islands, visitors are often struck by a simple but increasingly rare sight: children playing freely outdoors, a reflection of the country's strong sense of safety and community.
Beyond safety, Croatia’s experiential breadth continues to drive demand. From the UNESCO-listed Old City of Dubrovnik and the Roman heritage of Split, to truffle-rich forests in Istria, more than 1,000 Adriatic islands, and a rapidly evolving Michelin-recognized culinary scene, Croatia offers a layered travel experience that extends far beyond a traditional beach holiday.
“What resonates most with North American travelers is Croatia’s ability to offer contrast,” said Leila Krešić-Jurić, Director of the Croatian National Tourist Board in North America. “It is a destination where world-class gastronomy, rich cultural heritage, and island life exist alongside a slower, more intentional way of living. That balance is what makes Croatia increasingly distinctive in the European landscape.”
Croatia is also increasingly established as a year-round destination. Cultural programming, wellness retreats, winter gastronomy, and city breaks are driving visitation beyond the traditional summer season. Among this summer's highlights is Zagreb Classic (June 19-July 3), a free open-air festival featuring acclaimed Croatian and international performers, further reinforcing Zagreb's position as one of Central Europe's leading cultural destinations.
Getting There Has Never Been Easier
Improved air access has been a decisive factor in Croatia’s growth across North America. Direct seasonal flights now connect the United States with both Dubrovnik and Split, including the recently launched Split–U.S. route introduced in April 2026. Additional connections via Canada further strengthen access to Zagreb and key regional gateways.
As a result, Croatia has shifted decisively from a multi-stop European journey to a direct, streamlined long-haul destination for North American travelers.
Strong Recognition from the Travel Trade
The CNTB was recently awarded the “Power of Partnership – Destination Partner Award” by Travel Leaders Network, recognized by more than 60,000 travel advisors across North America. The award highlights destinations that demonstrate sustained collaboration, education, and support for the travel advisor ecosystem.
It also reinforces CNTB’s long-standing commitment to the North American travel trade and Croatia’s continued visibility within the advisor community.
Looking Ahead: 2026 Campaign and Global Spotlight
With global attention turning toward Croatia this summer during the FIFA World Cup, the country is preparing a major visibility campaign across key international markets, including North America.
Featuring Oscar-nominated actor John Malkovich, the campaign introduces the concept of fjaka, a uniquely Croatian state of calm and contentment, highlighting the country's lifestyle, culture, and sense of place.
The campaign will be unveiled on June 13 during "Croatia in the Game," a VIP event in Alexandria, Virginia, showcasing Croatian sport, culture, gastronomy, and tourism while reaffirming the country's commitment to the U.S. market.
