Nestled along the coastline of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Grand Velas Boutique Hotel Los Cabos is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort that offers an intimate alternative to the sprawling luxury resorts for which Los Cabos has become famous. With only 79 suites overlooking the Sea of Cortez, the hotel combines personalized service, fine dining, wellness, and immersive cultural experiences within a setting designed to feel peaceful and private.
Step into a World of Tranquility
Opened in January 2024, Grand Velas Boutique Hotel is the third Velas Resorts property in Los Cabos. Although it is considerably smaller than its sister property, Grand Velas Los Cabos, located next door, guests at the boutique hotel enjoy full access to the larger resort. The arrangement gives travelers the restaurants, spa, and amenities of a large luxury resort while allowing them to return to the tranquility of a much more intimate hotel.
What struck me first was how quickly the property created a sense of ease. Instead of entering an imposing lobby and standing at a conventional reception desk, I was welcomed into the comfortable setting of 51 Bar, where I could sit down with a beverage while completing the arrival process. After flying into Los Cabos, I appreciated how naturally the experience shifted from traveling to relaxing.
In the morning, 51 Bar serves coffee, pastries, and snacks; later in the day, it becomes a relaxed gathering place. That easy transition captured something I continued to notice throughout my stay: luxury here often feels less about grandeur and more about making things effortless, personal, and comfortable. As I explored the gardens, suites, restaurants, and wellness spaces, I found that the beauty of Grand Velas Boutique Hotel was only part of its appeal. Some of the most memorable details were the ones that connected the experience more closely to Mexico through food, traditions, wellness, and a genuine sense of place.
Bougainvillea and a Family Tradition
One detail I kept noticing throughout my stay was the bougainvillea. Brilliant shades of pink and purple appear across the gardens and pathways, adding bursts of color against the desert landscape and deep blue of the Sea of Cortez.
During my stay, I learned from a member of the team that bougainvillea has become a signature flower associated with Velas Resorts. A gardener connected with the family behind the resorts had a particular love for the flower and became known for cultivating it beautifully. After he passed away, the family continued the tradition. Knowing the story changed the way I looked at the flowers and made the choice feel more distinctive than simple landscaping. Having a flower so closely associated with the brand gives the property a visual signature of its own.
The grounds themselves feel lush and tranquil, with koi ponds and water features woven into the landscaping. Just beyond them, the desert terrain of Los Cabos and the Sea of Cortez create a striking contrast.
The Suite Life
The suites continue that balance between privacy and understated luxury. Private outdoor space is an important part of the experience, and depending on the accommodation, guests may have a plunge pool, a deeper private pool, a Jacuzzi, or an outdoor tub.
Inside my suite, I appreciated thoughtful contemporary touches such as Dyson hairdryers and straighteners, along with a vitamin treatment designed to be used after showering—a particularly welcome detail after spending time beneath the strong Los Cabos sun. One of my favorite features was the large bathtub. My boyfriend and I took advantage of it during our stay, and it became one of those simple, private moments that made the suite feel especially suited to a romantic escape.
Designed for Romance and Celebration
That sense of privacy makes Grand Velas Boutique Hotel a natural setting for honeymoons, anniversaries, babymoons, and other celebrations. Romantic experiences and packages are available, but much of the appeal comes naturally from the property itself.
The all-inclusive concept adds another dimension to a celebratory escape because so much is already taken care of. Dining, beverages, many activities, and numerous resort amenities are included in the stay. Rather than continually deciding what to add to a vacation, I found it easier to simply follow what interested me in the moment.
Salsa Overlooking the Sea
Some of the experiences I enjoyed most were the ones that used food as a way to explore Mexican culture beyond the restaurant table. The resort’s programming includes salsa making and Mexican cooking classes, as well as a more extensive class devoted to mole that reflects the time and complexity involved in preparing the famous Mexican sauce.
There are also Mexican chocolate tastings that explore different varieties and flavors, including chocolate paired with ingredients such as chipotle, as well as tastings of oysters fresh from the Sea of Cortez.
I participated in a salt tasting at the Agave Tasting Room, an experience that demonstrated just how complex a seemingly simple ingredient can be. Framed around the terroir of the ocean, the tasting featured six distinct salts sourced from Mexico and around the world. Each was presented with carefully selected ingredients that revealed differences in flavor, texture, and intensity. It was a fascinating way to experience an ingredient we rarely stop to consider on its own, and it reinforced how food can become a form of discovery.
A World of Dining Awaits
At Loto, the culinary focus is robata, a traditional Japanese method of grilling over an open fire. The restaurant combines Japanese techniques with Mexican ingredients and flavors, creating a fusion that reflects both traditions.
The dining experience extends well beyond Loto. Grand Velas Boutique guests also have access to the five signature dinner restaurants at its sister property without an additional charge. During my stay, I dined at Frida, where traditional Mexican cuisine is given a contemporary interpretation, and Lucca, with its Italian Mediterranean menu. Other choices include Piaf for traditional French cuisine, Cocina de Autor for creative evolutionary cuisine, and Velas 10 for seafood and steaks. Grand Velas Los Cabos is only about a three-minute walk away, and a golf cart can also transport guests between the resorts.
A Wellness Journey from Pool to Spa
One of the most beautiful areas of Grand Velas Boutique Hotel is the infinity pool overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Designed across two levels, it creates the visual effect of one body of water flowing toward another before seemingly disappearing into the ocean. The view becomes particularly special during whale season, generally from November through March, when migrating whales can be seen in the waters off Los Cabos.
The fitness and wellness areas are equipped with Technogym equipment, but what caught my attention was a virtual training system built into a mirrored screen. Guests can select a workout and follow an instructor displayed in the mirror, bringing an interactive element to exercising while traveling. The resort also offers wellness programming that includes mat-based fitness classes and aqua fitness.
Wellness extends to the spa experience as well. I visited SE Spa at Grand Velas Los Cabos, where a spa valet guided me through the Water Ceremony, an extensive hydrotherapy journey incorporating hot and cold environments, including a sauna, steam room, ice room, sensory experiences, and a magnesium pool with different water circuits. Afterward, treatments can be tailored using different massage techniques according to individual preferences.
What Will You Discover at Grand Velas Boutique?
Walking back through the gardens to my suite, I noticed the bougainvillea again. I had admired the same flowers earlier in my stay, but now I knew the family story behind them.
That small change in perspective captures what I found most interesting about Grand Velas Boutique Hotel Los Cabos. The resort offers the pleasures expected from a luxury Los Cabos vacation, but its most memorable moments often came from the experiences that encouraged me to look beyond the resort itself and discover something more about Mexico.
