Easter in Los Cabos: The Last Whales and Mexico’s Busiest Week

Easter in Los Cabos: The Last Whales and Mexico’s Busiest Week

Easter 2027 falls on March 28, the earliest since 2016 — landing in the final weeks of whale season and squarely inside Semana Santa, when Los Cabos runs at ninety per cent full. The private house is not a luxury that week. It is the only way to have the coast to yourself.

The mornings give it away first. By late March the light over the Sea of Cortés has lost its winter flatness and turned the particular gold that photographers come for, and the water off Palmilla sits glassy until about ten. Breakfast is on the terrace because it is already warm enough to be, and somewhere past the second cup of coffee there is a spout offshore — a puff of white against the blue, then the slow dark curve of a back, then nothing. Somebody at the table stands up. Nobody finishes the sentence they were in the middle of.

It is, in the judgement of Haute Retreats, the luxury villa and concierge company with more than 2,400 villas, mansions and private estates across 83-plus destinations, the best single week of the Cabo year — and in 2027 it is also the hardest to get.

Easter 2027 in Los Cabos, in brief: Easter Sunday falls on March 28, 2027, the earliest since 2016. It lands inside the last weeks of the whale season, which runs from mid-December to mid-April, and inside Semana Santa, one of the two busiest tourism weeks of the year in Baja California Sur. Los Cabos hotel occupancy has reached around ninety per cent that week. The company’s guidance is to secure a villa six to nine months ahead — which means deciding in the fall.

The date that makes this year different

Easter moves, and in 2027 it moves early. March 28 is the earliest Easter Sunday since 2016, and the earliest it will fall again until 2035. Most years the holiday arrives in April, by which point the Baja whale season is closing and the Sea of Cortés has begun to empty of its winter visitors.

Not in 2027. Whale watching in Los Cabos runs from roughly mid-December to mid-April, with humpbacks migrating past the coast through the season, and Easter week sits inside its final act — the weeks when the mothers and their calves are working their way back north and the sightings happen close enough to shore that you do not need a boat to have one. Across Haute Retreats Los Cabos villas, the cliffside and beachfront houses of Pedregal and Palmilla look directly onto the water they pass through. It is the kind of coincidence of calendar and migration that does not repeat for another eight years.

What nobody tells you about Easter in Mexico

Here is the part that the brochures leave out, and the part that changes how the week should be planned.

Easter in Mexico is Semana Santa, and Semana Santa is not a quiet religious observance that happens around your holiday. It is, alongside Christmas, one of the two biggest travel weeks of the entire Mexican year. Baja California Sur fills. Los Cabos hotel occupancy has run at around ninety per cent during the week, with well over a hundred thousand visitors on the beaches and a split of roughly sixty per cent international to forty per cent domestic — families arriving from Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and the Bajío alongside the flights from Los Angeles and Dallas.

This is not a warning. It is, in its way, the argument for going: Semana Santa is when the coast is at its most alive, when the restaurants are full of Mexican families rather than only foreign ones, and when the town has the particular electricity of a place celebrating something of its own. But it does mean that the version of the week you get depends entirely on where you are standing when it happens.

Which is why the house matters more than usual

A hotel at ninety per cent is a hotel you feel. The pool has a system for towels. Dinner is at the second sitting because the first was gone in January. The beach in front of the property is a public beach, as all Mexican beaches are, and during Semana Santa it belongs, joyfully and correctly, to everybody. Across the company’s luxury villas in Mexico, the proposition that week is simply different: your own terrace, your own water, your own hour for breakfast, and the crowd experienced as something you choose to walk into rather than something you wake up inside.

The service question is worth being precise about, because the market is loose with it. In the company’s fully staffed collection, a private chef, a villa manager and daily housekeeping are in residence and included. Elsewhere in the portfolio a chef and additional staff can be arranged at extra cost, and a 24/7 concierge desk sits over every stay regardless. What cannot be conjured at short notice, during the single busiest week of the Mexican year, is the household itself — which is the real reason the best houses go first, and go early.

Every stay runs the same preparation: twenty-one days before arrival the household is briefed on the specific family coming — the allergies, the ages, the meals that should be occasions and the ones that should simply appear — and the chef is assigned against that brief rather than against a rota. Provisioning for Semana Santa is planned weeks out, because a supply chain that is comfortable in November is not comfortable in Holy Week.

Where to be

The collection spans four distinct characters. Palmilla is the establishment choice — golf, calm swimmable water, the ocean-view houses like Las Brisas and the beachfront estates such as Casa Roca de Pajaro. Pedregal is the dramatic one, cut into the cliffs above Cabo San Lucas, where a house like Vista Dream trades beach access for a view that makes the whales feel like they are performing for the terrace. San José del Cabo is the quieter, more Mexican end, with the art walk and the old town square that will be at its best during Holy Week. The Tourist Corridor runs between them and holds much of the newest inventory.

For Easter specifically, the calculation is slightly different from the rest of high season. San José rewards anyone who actually wants to see Semana Santa rather than watch it from a distance. Palmilla and the Corridor suit families who want the celebration available but not underfoot. Pedregal suits the household that intends to leave the property approximately twice.

The window, stated plainly

The company’s published guidance for Los Cabos separates two things. Regular high season, January through March, asks for four to six months’ notice. The peak holiday weeks ask for nine to twelve. Easter sits between the two definitions and behaves like the second — so the honest window for March 2027 is six to nine months out, which places the decision in the fall of 2026 rather than in the new year.

It is worth saying why that is not merely a sales position. The households that book this week are disproportionately returning ones: eight in ten of the company’s guest families come back, and a returning family books the same week the following year before leaving the property. By the time a first-time visitor starts looking in January, a meaningful share of the best houses has already been quietly renewed by the people who were in them.

"Semana Santa is the week I tell people to go, and the week I tell them not to improvise," said Sabrina Piccinin, Founder and CEO of Haute Retreats. "Cabo is at its best and at its fullest at the same time. With the right house you get both — the country celebrating outside, and your own morning inside. Without one you get somebody else’s version of the week. In 2027 there are whales as well, which is not something the calendar offers often."

The short version

Easter 2027 is early, which puts Los Cabos in the last weeks of its whale season. It is Semana Santa, which puts the coast at around ninety per cent full. Those two facts point the same way: it is the best week to be there, and the one that least tolerates a late decision.

The company’s spring 2027 collection is open, and its concierge team will talk through dates, enclaves and staffing before anything is held — which is, for this particular week, the conversation worth having first.
