Find Luxury in Tokyo
June 23, 2016
So, what does Tokyo have to offer those of you who like to live life at a slightly slower pace or those of you who enjoy the finer things in life? Tokyo is full of luxury experiences and here are our top picks!
Eat: Michelin Star Food
Omakase by Sarah Ackerman

Tokyo holds the impressive accolade of having the highest number of Michelin starred restaurants in one city, (sorry France). Ishikawa, a three Michelin-starred restaurant, is hidden away behind Bishamonten Temple and the fact that it is almost impossible to find only adds to the allure and exclusivity of it. This is an authentic Japanese Kaiseki (multi course) experience where hungry diners can choose from just two set menus, meaning it pays to be a lover of all foods. There are only four private rooms here and just seven seats at the counter, so ensure you make a reservation well in advance. From sashimi of sea bream to pike eel dumplings, you never know quite what you'll get from the creative genius behind it all, but what you can be sure of is a warm welcome.
Experience: Japanese Tea Ceremony
Tea Ceremony Instruments by Takashi .M
This one will really slow the pace down. Grab a cup of tea in Starbucks and you'll only be there for ten minutes as part of the soulless conveyor belt of patrons, but attend a tea ceremony in Tokyo and you'll be spending a few hours enjoying an unforgettable traditional experience. It's a spiritual ritual more than it is a friendly gathering for some chit chat over a hot beverage. Sitting on the tatami with your legs crossed under the table for two hours is quite the challenge, but fear not as your hosts will make allowances. It's viewed as an art form by the Japanese people and the room in which it occurs is beautifully decorated in tune with the current season. You'll also get to sample those beautiful little Japanese tea sets crafted from bamboo and ceramics.
Enjoy: The Spa, Japanese Style
Blue Hot Spring by Tanaka Juuyoh
After a day on your feet, head to one of the local onsens (hot springs) to soak up the natural benefits of Japan's volcanic waters from deep underground without ever leaving the city. From peaceful public baths to mega complexes, there's an onsen for everyone. For a more traditional bathing experience visit
Take no Yu
where the water is famously said to resemble coffee, or for an all-singing, all-dancing mega-spa experience, head to Oedo Onsen Monogatari where you can even stay overnight. Some onsen allow you to hire a private room for hours at a time and of course you will gain access to all of the complex's facilities which usually include an assortment of indoor and outdoor baths, dry saunas, steam saunas and if you're lucky a place to enjoy a massage. The volcanic waters are said to help circulation and relieve muscle ache, with many onsens offering beautiful garden scenery throughout cherry blossom season. One more thing- no swimsuits allowed!
Watch: Kabuki
Kabuki Theatre by Kobakou
A popular activity to keep things relaxed when in the city is to go and watch a Kabuki performance. This ancient form of entertainment allows a glimpse into Japan's rich history and culture, with performances held daily. Kabuki is a traditional form of Japanese theatre that draws on melodrama through the use of exaggerated movements, extravagant costumes and elaborate stage sets. A full-length kabuki performance takes place over an entire afternoon or evening and is comprised of three or four acts, lasting for around four hours in total. This is one for the culture vultures amongst you who are looking to get away from the busy streets.
