Formentera Beaches and Coves to Visit

Formentera Beaches and Coves to Visit

Formentera Island is a true natural paradise in the Mediterranean Sea. Located to the south of Ibiza, you can take a fast ferry from Ibiza every 30 minutes.

Once you arrive to Formentera, if you decide to travel by road, the best option is to rent a motorcycle at any rental office in the Port of Formentera. It is the most time-efficient choice, as the island of Formentera is not very large, the weather is usually perfect for touring by motorcycle and, sometimes, you will be able to park relatively close to these beaches and coves, thus avoiding long waits and walks due to parking the car far from the beaches and coves.

Alternatively, the most beautiful, least stressful, and best-accessible choice to visit these beaches and coves is by sea. For this, you can rent a boat with your family and friends, and you will also enjoy the sailing experience and the spectacular views from the sea. If you are in Ibiza, I recommend spending a day on a private yacht Ibiza to Formentera.

Anyway, I recommend visiting the following beaches and coves, where you will be amazed by the contrast of their waters, offering unparalleled quality:

  1. Illetes

Illetes beach, located in the north of Formentera, is on a very long strip of land within the Las Salinas Natural Park, which includes the south of Ibiza, the north of Formentera and the channel that separates both islands.

It is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular beaches in Spain, as the whiteness of the sand and the purity of Formentera's waters allow you to enjoy a sea with an impressive shade of blue. However, this beach is also known as the "Caribbean of the Mediterranean".

If you move further north along the beach, you will reach a point with spectacular views: a long pathway with beaches on both sides. Therefore, within less than 30 meters, we can enjoy two beaches with opposite views, known as Es Trucadors.

  1. Es Trucadors

If you continue even further, you will arrive at Es Pas des Trucadors, the northern tip of Formentera Island. From here, you are just a few meters away from the fabulous islet of Espalmador, a deserted island with a few spectacular, solitary white sand beaches, much like those of Illetes. It’s so close that, during low tide, it’s possible to walk from one island to the other (the water will come up above your waist).

The location and formation of this beach are one of those beautiful whims of nature that we can still enjoy in Formentera. The water at Es Trucadors Beach is stunning, taking on intense shades of blue over fine white sand. Undoubtedly, it is a small paradise closer than we might imagine.

  1. Llevant Beach

This beach faces east and stretches along the entire opposite coast of Illetes. In some sections, the proximity is so close that, in just about fifty meters, you can easily move from one beach to the other or simply set your towel in between and enjoy the best of both coasts. This beach also boasts 1,450 meters of white sand and crystal-clear waters in the characteristic shades of blue that Formentera is known for. Its average width is approximately 90 meters. Some areas feature rocky outcrops that create small, cozy corners.

One of the advantages of this spot is that when the winds shift toward the west, it’s perfect for sheltering from them. Although the prevailing winds during the summer are from the east (Levante), which mostly affect this beach, the waves are usually light.

It is so similar to the qualities of Illetes that it is often chosen by those looking for an alternative to its bustle. Llevant Beach is ideal for unwinding and enjoying a landscape with barely any buildings. You’ll find a few beach kiosks where you can enjoy a meal by the sea without leaving the beach. The views toward the eastern coast of Formentera in the distance, along with its wide sandy areas, make it a magnificent spot for any summer day or even for long walks during the winter.

  1. Saona Cove

Cala Saona is known as the jewel of the western coast of Formentera, being the only sandy beach nestled between the cliffs that dominate the entire southwest part of the island.

Unlike the open beaches elsewhere on the island, this is a cove, a small bay flanked by cliffs. The beach is only 140 meters long, though it is quite wide. Despite its size, it remains one of the favorites on Formentera and attracts a large number of visitors.

What stands out most about this beach is its sandy bottom and turquoise waters, much like many other beaches in Formentera. However, here, you can also enjoy one of the best sunsets on the island, as the sun sets behind the horizon.

  1. Migjorn

Migjorn is the name given to the southern coast of Formentera, which stretches over five kilometers of paradise-like beaches. This is the longest beach on the island, consisting of several coves separated by patches of rocky and sandy areas. Each of these coves has its own name and offers various access points.

Being such an extensive beach with so many options, it is highly recommended for families, especially because it is usually well sheltered from the prevailing winds during the summer months and has shallow sandy bottoms, making it very safe for swimming. Additionally, although it may not seem so at first glance due to its southern orientation, it is also an ideal spot to enjoy the sunset at any of its beach bars and kiosks, offering a truly special sunset after the fullness of the horizon.
