Freediving has a storied history in the Turks and Caicos Islands, interwoven with the incredible achievements of two iconic figures: Jacques Mayol and Tanya Streeter. Jacques Mayol, a French freediving pioneer, discovered the allure of South Caicos in 1959. He became an integral part of the island community and, even in his later years, continued to dive to remarkable depths. Known for his rivalry with Italian freediver Enzo Maiorca, Mayol captivated the world as the first person to descend to 100 meters (328 feet) on a single breath in the No Limits category, inspiring the iconic film The Big Blue.

Mayol’s connection to the Turks and Caicos Islands extended beyond sport; he embraced the local lifestyle, learning freediving techniques from local lobster and conch fishermen. His presence left a lasting impact, as he continued to dive and write, drawing from his time in the islands until his passing.

In 2002, Tanya Streeter, another freediving legend, carried on this legacy in the Turks and Caicos Islands by setting a world record for both men and women in the Variable Weight discipline, descending to an astounding 400 feet (122 meters). Her remarkable feat solidified the islands' place in freediving history and demonstrated the incredible human potential within these beautiful waters.
