Day 2: The Southern Coastline
This morning, get behind the wheel of your Land Rover for the first time for the drive along Iceland’s famous Route 1 towards your first destination. Follow its southern route, traversing plunging gorges, remote plains, lava beds and mountain passes. Having negotiated the black sands that border the fishing villages of Thorlakshofn, Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri, turn inland at the town of Þorlákshöfn. Following the Sog River you will skirt Iceland’s largest lake, Þingvallavatn, before reaching Hotel Ion, your home for the next two nights. Located in Thingvellir National Park, Hotel Ion is set against a backdrop of majestic mountainous lava and is the perfect location for the Golden Circle.

Day 3: Skógafoss Waterfall
After a quick debrief with your Land Rover instructors, head towards the southern shores of Iceland, navigating river crossings and rocky passes as you go. The views are also sensational, and on a clear day the mountains of the Vestmannaeyjar islands are a sight to behold. Following lunch at the foot of the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier, continue your journey along the southern coast to the dramatic black sand beaches of Vik. Driving along the wet sands will be sure to put your newfound driving skills to the test. Visit the remarkable Skógafoss waterfall, positioned on the cliffs of what used to be the coastline before it receded seaward some three miles away. One of the largest waterfalls in the country, it produces a vast amount of spray resulting in a constant rainbow and sometimes even a double rainbow.

Day 4: The Golden Circle
Today you will experience Iceland’s trio of natural attractions, the famed Golden Circle, home to the island’s most beautiful landscapes. Drive the short distance from your hotel to Þingvellir National Park, a geological phenomenon and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your first stop takes in the rift valley, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are gradually — and visibly — moving away from each other, creating a deep fissure that creates beautifully clear diving conditions. Driving on from Þingvellir, pause at Geysir, home to a number of hot geysers, including Stokkur, which spouts every few minutes at a height of up to 130 feet. The highlight of your day will undoubtedly be Gulfoss, Iceland’s most famous waterfall. Leaving the cars behind, you’re transferred by “bigfoot” 4x4 to the Langjökull Glacier, the second largest glacier in the country, where you will spend the afternoon snowmobiling. After a day of adventure, head back to Reykjavík and enjoy a well-deserved farewell dinner with your instructors and local guide.

Day 5: Depart Iceland
After breakfast; take a last opportunity to explore downtown Reykjavík – the cathedral, restaurants, shops and harbor are all within walking distance. You are then driven from your hotel back to Keflavík Airport for your return flight home. You may also choose to visit the Blue Lagoon today if your flight time permits; alternatively, you may wish to extend your trip in order to spend more time exploring this fascinating country.
