Golfweek Magazine Rates Whiteface Club and Resort 4th Best Classic Layout in New York
The John Van Kleek-redesigned layout, in consultation with Walter Hagen, is ranked 11th in New York State among Golfweek Magazine's 2014 Best Courses You Can Play. It is also ranked fourth among classic clubs in the state.

In the publication's Top 15, the Whiteface Club is in the company of two-time U.S. Open host Bethpage Black, two of the courses at Turning Stone in Central New York, Saratoga National and Ravenwood, outside Rochester. It is the third time the Whiteface Club has appeared in this category.

“We are very pleased and honored to have been recognized for the third time in 10 years by Golfweek in the Top 15 courses in New York State,” said Mark Sperling, General Manager of the Whiteface Club Companies. “It is a testimony to the entire team, from PGA professional J. Peter Martin and his shop staff, to Course Superintendent Mike Sabbatini and his groundskeepers and the dedicated employees who beautify the Whiteface Club surroundings. They are the reasons for our success and recognition.”

The club continues to reinvest in its golf course by announcing the purchase of new greens and fairway mowers, while also making clubhouse improvements with expanded dining space on its new Veranda.

“Our goals are to make the best course in the Adirondacks even better, and continue our climb up the Golfweek rankings,” added Sperling. “Our objective is to be number one.”

The challenging layout, carved from the Adirondack pine 116 years ago, plays to a par of 71 and benefits from state-of-the-art irrigation. Its' dramatic signature hole, the par 5 sixth, presents a stunning view of nearby Whiteface Mountain, site of the 1980 Winter Olympic alpine skiing events. This 490 yard hole starts with a precipitous drop from tee to fairway, followed by a dog leg left, and concludes with a climb of several stories over the final 90 yards to the green.

Also, the par three, 14th hole, measuring 211 yards uphill to a narrow, undulating green with out- of-bounds on the left and bunkers on both sides, may be the most difficult par in the Adirondacks.

Discerning golfers in Lake Placid will not only enjoy the course, but other amenities, too, on the 400 acre property. Those include tennis, marina, The Café on the Green adjacent to the practice area, the Veranda outside the café, Moose Lodge Boathouse with dining overlooking Lake Placid lake and a popular Wedding Garden, recently named among the best in the state for 2014 by The Knot. All of this is surrounded by the 46 Adirondack High Peaks.

"I am very appreciative of the Board of Directors and owners of the Whiteface Club Companies,” continued Sperling. “Bart van der Meer, Pat Barrett, Ed Weibrecht and Greg Peacock have been supportive of making our course the best in the region from day one.”

The Whiteface Club and Resort is sister property of the AAA Four Diamond-rated Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid. These time-honored partners, separated by just three miles, collaborate with attractive Stay and Play packages.
“We are proud of our staff at the Whiteface Club and Resort for securing the Golfweek ranking once again,” said Weibrecht, owner of Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa, whose lodging property has received the Four Diamond designation for the past 30 consecutive years. “Each and every staff member works diligently to present the golf course in immaculate condition day after day. The reward from Golfweek, together with the many compliments we hear from the players, tells us we are doing things correctly and making people happy with the experience. I cannot thank the staff enough for the pride they take in their work.”

The golf course will open Friday, May 9, and features a slate of exciting golf events. Among the highlights: The J. Peter Martin Whiteface Open, July 12-13, brings the region's top men and women amateurs together for a 36-hole competition; The Whiteface Club Championship, another 36-hole event, is set for Aug. 16-17 for members of the club; The Adirondack Senior Open and Pro-Am, part of the Sunbelt Senior Tour, Aug. 26-29, finds outstanding senior professionals tackling the challenging Whiteface Club track in a 54-hole stroke play format as they aspire to reach the Champions Tour.

Inside Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa, guests will find 131 lodging units, a world-class spa, the Four Diamond The View Restaurant, as well as Taste Bistro and Bar. The hotel overlooks Mirror Lake as does its' Cottage Café. The popular pub offers indoor and outdoor service, and provides a perfect setting to sharing stories after a round of golf.

The seven-acre resort property is just a two-minute walk from the village's alpine-themed Main Street. This friendly corridor is dotted with many locally owned shops and outlet stores, numerous restaurants, several cozy bars and some small lakeside parks.

Lake Placid's famed Olympic venues, open year-round for the enjoyment of residents and guests, are just a drive and a wedge from the Whiteface Club, Mirror Lake Inn and Main Street.
