Timeless Mountain-Inspired Design

Guesthouse Lake Tahoe’s design reflects a modern interpretation of the classic mountain home, inspired by both Truckee’s historic charm and the tranquility of the Sierra Nevada landscape. With architecture by Ryan Group Architects and interior design by Halfdan Pedersen brought to life by Lake Tahoe-based Olympia Pearl Design and Sally Lyons of Blue Skies 3D, alongside furniture and art curated by the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, every element of the home has been thoughtfully considered to foster connection—to one another, to nature, and to the region it occupies. Expansive windows and tall ceilings draw the outdoors in, while a warm palette of natural colors and materials fashion a lived-in, nostalgic feel that balances comfort and sophistication.

Pedersen, renowned for his soulful, eclectic approach to hospitality and residential design across the U.S. and Iceland, drew inspiration from Truckee’s rugged landscape and storied past to create a laidback second-home feel that puts views at the forefront. Warm elements and finishes such as dark stone and rich walnut accents, mahogany window trim, white oak hardwood floors, walnut clad ceilings – a nod to classic ski chalets – and slate entryway tiles with fossil imprints bring character into the home, allowing it to feel charming and timeless, despite its modern amenities and cutting-edge technology.

The furnishings and art are also inspired by the familiar and relaxed hospitality of Guesthouse, combined with the region’s history. The Michael Hsu Office of Architecture sought furnishings that have the elegance of a hotel and the comfort and relaxation of home, folding in vintage elements, like the Danish Teak Secretaire in the loft, various Afghan and Turkish rugs throughout, and thoughtful accessories and objets d'art, many of which were sourced in Truckee. The art reflects the home’s beautiful natural surroundings through the artists' exploration of various textures and scale, with standout artworks by Louis Ignacio Figallo, Milie, Tibbs, and Alyssa Bried.

The kitchen, designed by Kitchen, Restaurant & Bar Specialists, serves as the heart of the home, fostering shared moments and lively conversation. A wood-burning fireplace anchors the main living area, inviting connection and repose, while guest suites offer a tranquil sense of retreat through custom-built wardrobes, layered textiles, and handcrafted details. In the media room, deep blue walls evoke the serene tones of nearby Lake Tahoe, complemented by a custom wrap-around walnut sofa table that enhances the room’s inviting atmosphere. Extending the  spirit of togetherness outdoors, terraces and patios furnished in natural materials blur the line between interior and exterior living—ideal for fireside gatherings, morning coffee, or sunset views over the alpine horizon. The resulting design blends Old World craftsmanship with modern sensibility to foster an environment of connection, creativity, and comfort that celebrates its Truckee-Tahoe surroundings.
