Haymarket by Scandic – Stockholm's New Hotel Classic

Haymarket fuse and restored the building’s historic art deco details with modern design and an international atmosphere.

Scandic, which operates 230 hotels in eight countries around Europe, continues its expansion in Sweden with the opening of Haymarket located at Hötorget in Stockholm’s Norrmalm neighborhood. The hotel’s name comes from the literal translation for “hay market,” a square that has served as a market place since the late 1600s.

Haymarket, is a destination of constant movement and inspiration for Stockholm residents and international travelers alike, with 405 hotel rooms, 16 suites, one generous restaurant, a smaller extended café, a cosmopolitan bar, an event floor for up to 600 mingling people, an intimate cinema and a unique rooftop event space. Imbued with the spirit of the city and steeped in the history of the PUB building, Haymarket acts as the spot for social meetings and events in Stockholm’s city center.

PUB founder Paul U. Bergström first opened several smaller clothing boutiques surrounding the Hötorget square in the late 1880s. In 1916, the large PUB department store, which is now Haymarket, was completed and went on to become a landmark for retail for Stockholm residents and tourists visiting the city.

At the helm of the hotel’s design strategy is Stockholm-based architecture and interior design company Koncept. The design team has chosen to restore original art deco details including patterned floors, curved stairway rails and the entrance’s gallery-like character. These historical design elements contrast the modern custom-designed pieces from Koncept and Scandinavian furniture from designers such as Sika Design, &Tradition, Rubn and Gubi.



Each room at Haymarket is infused with a chic 1920s ambience with features such as marble countertops, velvet couches along with modern details such as rose gold faucets and custom-designed patterned wallpaper and textiles. More than 400 rooms and suites with one exclusive suite with attached rooftop terrace is available as an event space catering to both private and business events.

Haymarket’s restaurant, extended café and bar does not only offer breakfast, lunch and dinner for travelers and overnight guests, but also serves as the obvious food destination for Stockholm residents.

The hotel’s main restaurant “Paul’s” is an American brassiere influenced by European cooking and the elegance from the days gone by. A timeless, classic atmosphere with decadent food from both sides of the Atlantic.

Gretas; the hotel’s extended café named after PUB’s own Greta Garbo, who started her career as a sales clerk in the hat department and went on to become one of Sweden’s most famous exports to Hollywood is a modern interpretation of the 1920’s explosion of consciousness, glamour and expression. A meeting between the past and the future, with a focus on healthy, environmentally friendly food, without compromising the flavors. An all-day-long cafe with continuously changing menu, where the day starts off with coffee and ends with champagne and oysters.

Americain is a sophisticated cocktail bar with historical influences and a Caribbean touch. A modern interpretation of the hotel bars from “the good old days” that offers an experience on an international level.
