The seventh annual Global Vision Awards, being celebrated in New York on October 21, recognize organizations that are working to preserve the world's precious cultural and natural resources. King Pacific Lodge, the floating wilderness lodge on British Columbia's remote northern coast, was praised for its leadership in stewarding this pristine wilderness, as well as in reducing its carbon footprint. The awards are selected by a jury of experts including Lauren Bush, José Andrés, Bonnie Burnham, and Premal Shah.
The 17-room lodge made headlines in 2006 for its role in establishing protection for the 21 million-acre Great Bear Rainforest, which surrounds the property. King Pacific strives for efficiencies on the floating barge with filtration facilities that use glacial river water, a food and beverage program based on locally sourced ingredients, and plans for a river-hydro plant and solar panels to reduce energy use. Moreover the company has committed to halving its carbon footprint by the end of 2012.
King Pacific Lodge president, Michael Uehara, says of winning this award, “We are very conscious that operating a luxury resort in a pristine environment comes with responsibilities. We never lose sight of the fact that our guests come to the Great Bear Rainforest to marvel at the wilderness and the wildlife we are privileged to have around us. Treading lightly on our surroundings is our mantra.”
To celebrate being a Global Vision Award winner, King Pacific Lodge is offering guests in 2012 the opportunity to donate up to $1,000 towards the charity Guarding the Gifts, in partnership with the local Gitga'at First Nation, to support conservation initiatives. The donation will be deducted from the cost of a visit to the lodge.`
